March 2017

I first visited the Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar (Burma) in 2015, and it was great to be back. This time, I took two of my visit tips seriously — I visited in the evening (no more red-hot marble to walk across) and brought a bag to put my shoes and socks in.

On this visit, I entered the Shwedagon Pagoda via the north entrance and was most surprised to see an escalator to take visitors up to the Pagoda. I thought it was very unsafe. Have you ever ridden an escalator with no shoes on? It is not fun. It was excruciating, and I wondered if I would have the same number of toes at the end of the ride as I did at the start.

On my last visit, I was blown away by the temple complex’s size and beauty. It is stunning and one of those places you visit for which photos don’t convey how amazing it is. To experience it, you have to visit.

There are so many sculptures and so much gold.
