October Selection: Book Cover Designs

Usually I pick out a mixture of cover designs I see in my book stalking travels but this month I spotted all of them in the latest Goodreads Newsletter. Must be that time of year. Soon the Christmas novels will start rolling out soon.

My favourite in October’s selection is the gothic grave one below. I’m hanging out to do a gothic grave cover one day (maybe a future short story?). Sit back and enjoy the design binge:

Warning: I’m Australian so I spell differently: colour instead of color. Please forgive me.

Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits: A Novel

by David Wong

What stands out the most with this cover is the diagonal text and I love the guns also streaming across the cover. The burnt orange and yellow of the text is also effective. The cat is done perfectly with the correct shadowing. Very modern and definitely a book that tantalises my curiosity.

Description:

Nightmarish villains with superhuman enhancements. An all-seeing social network that tracks your every move. Mysterious, smooth-talking power players who lurk behind the scenes. A young woman from the trailer park. And her very smelly cat. Together, they will decide the future of mankind.

The Tears of Dark Water

by Corban Addison

One of my absolute favourites. The light shining behind the boat is captivating and enchanting. It invites the reader inside this mysterious journey. I have a thing for maps on books covers and this one is done perfectly. You can’t make the places but you’re not suppose to. Love the paisley pattern over the sky also. Exotic destination maybe? Text also has a slight watery feel. Overall its excellent.

Daniel and Vanessa Parker are an American success story. He is a Washington, DC, power broker, and she is a physician with a thriving practice. But behind the gilded façade, their marriage is a shambles, and their teenage son, Quentin, is self-destructing. In desperation, Daniel dusts off a long-delayed dream — a sailing trip around the world. Little does he know, the voyage he hopes will save them may destroy them instead.

The Rose Society (A Young Elites Novel)

by Marie Lu

I really wan’t to pick this designers brain. The text across the wood panels is flawless. Dark, shadowy and realistic. The red roses compliment the scene and the twisty roots are places effectively. Title, tagline and author name all stand out and are readable which shows pure skill of the designer. All in all a perfect cover for the genre.

Description:

From Jennifer Donnelly, the critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of A Northern Light and Revolution, comes a mystery about dark secrets, dirty truths, and the lengths to which people will go for love and revenge. For fans of Elizabeth George and Libba Bray,These Shallow Graves is the story of how much a young woman is willing to risk and lose in order to find the truth.

Velvet Undercover

by Teri Brown

This is actually a spy thriller but looks so modern. Looking closely at the photography of the girl in the red dress, she has old fashioned pearls and jewellery. A great picture that I wonder where they got it from. It almost looks like they could have staged the photo shoot themselves. I chose it because the wishy washy hand drawn gold text gives a great feel and you don’t see this type that often. It also looks perfect against the red dress. I can’t read the tagline very clearly but the authors name is clear.

Description:Perfect for fans of Jennifer Donnelly and Libba Bray comes this page-turning historical spy thriller from Teri Brown, author of the Born of Illusion series.Samantha Donaldson’s family has always done its duty for the British Crown. In the midst of World War I, seventeen-year-old Sam follows in their footsteps, serving her country from the homefront as a messenger for the intelligence organization MI5. After her father disappears on a diplomatic mission, she continues their studies of languages, mathematics, and complex puzzles, hoping to make him proud.
