Definitely something I had to deal with with my previous startups. It’s usually challenging coming up with a company & product name (dictionary names for a company are 90/100 cases taken by now — try Googling one).
The way to go around this is to find something fresh — there’s a billion ways you can combine alphabets to come up with a company + product name. Then do a name+ copyrights check to make sure you’re not infringing or using someone’s legally registered name. At that point, you’re pretty close to getting a cool name.
If it’s that hard to come up with a name that sticks, then come up with a slick name instead. Think of a name like AirBnB — strange one, but when they made it, no one could ignore them.
Have a pick at a name. And make it work!
Eventually, I realised that t’was a lot less work for our company to structure out and streamline same-product same-business-name than having to deal with a two variations.
Thanks for that advice Fredrik Andersson!! And thumbs up for this piece!
