I got asked if we could publish the “Tupalo Kanban Story” in ‘small chunks’ somewhere. Well, we did publish it on our blog some years ago, but I guess it might be more accessible to people interested in Kanban on Medium. So, here we go — our story, insights and some challenges we experienced when we implemented Kanban seven years ago…

In the next posts we will explain why we started, what we did to implement a Kanban System and how our Kanban Board Design developed over the years. If you are looking for a more elaborate version, you can also check out the Lean Kanban case study about Tupalo.

The Tupalo Team — Kanban Class of 2010

What happened…

September 2010: We did it! We implemented KANBAN (= methodology of incremental process improvement/pull system approach) at Tupalo.com HQ here in Vienna. After reviewing various theories of lean & agile management over the past weeks and months, KANBAN became our best friend.

Not seeing it as an actual ‘new’ project management approach but rather as a methodology to improve our internal processes, we added a visual element to our daily work life — the KANBAN Board: transparent, colourful and extremely useful when it comes to just-in-time updates on our status quo.
