BUT, YOU DON’T WANT A GOD TO EXIST
In a special football game a referee is given absolute authority over every aspect of the game. As the game begins, the ref decides right off to give one team 14 points. Then there’s a kick off, but the ref decides to give the ball to the team kicking the ball. At the beginning of the third quarter the ref takes the 14 points he gave one team and doubles it. The players have had enough and start walking off the field. When asked why they quit the game they say, “The referee clearly favors one team over the other. If he can change the rules on a whim then we’re just going through the motions without rhyme or reason, and there’s no point for us to even be on the field.”
When parents pray to a god to save their child from a deadly disease, what they are actually doing is asking god to favor their child over the millions of other children that are dying. It’s a wonderful thought, as long your child is the favored one. For the millions of others, not so much.
Just imagine god walking through a hospital with a bunch of doctors. He points to one child and says, “I will save this child, but not that one. I want that child to die. In fact, I want the rest of them to die.” Who could love a god like that? I know what you’re thinking here, that god isn’t wishing death on those children; he is rewarding them with a place in heaven. If that were the case then every parent would pray for their child to die. They would be grief-stricken if their child pulled through. And, that would be insane.
We pray to a god for our teams to win, to protect us from harm, to get us that job, to cure our addictions, to take away our pain… If a god did any or all of that, then what would be the point of this life? If he can change the rules on a whim then we’re just going through the motions without rhyme or reason, and there’s no point for us to even be on the field.
As it stands right now, this life is our game and it is subject to how much work we put into it, with good or bad luck mixed in (whether our loved ones live or die from a disease or a terrible accident). That’s life!
When people claim that they want god in control of their lives they are saying that they want to be someone’s puppet, to just go through the motions of life without actually living it. What would be the point?
When atheists tell you that god, any god, doesn’t exist, it is backed by the claim that, if you really think about it, you DON’T WANT a god to exist.
