The Great Betrayal: How the ‘Free Press’ Committed One of the Worst Acts of Treason in Human History

“Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.” — Thomas Jefferson ( 28 January 1786)

It’s difficult to determine where, exactly, things went wrong. Journalism has always had its peaks and valleys — an error here, a scandal there — but since the inception of the ‘Free Press’ in the America, it has usually striven to speak truth to power and to fight for the side of the American citizenry in an effort to keep the populace informed and protected from government corruption. This was its explicit purpose, a bulwark against the elites of society and politics. A defender of the common man. The founders of this country knew firsthand of the necessity of a Free Press, and found the idea so important they enshrined it in the very first amendment in the Bill of Rights.

But somewhere along the way, the Free Press decided to forsake the American people.

The Progenitor of Fake News

The question becomes — is this a recent phenomenon and if not, how far back does this treachery go? While American journalism has always typically leaned left, it has in the past gone so far to the left that it bordered on propaganda. One of the most egregious examples of this would be the scandal involving Walter Duranty and the New York Times.

From 1922–1936, Duranty was the Moscow Bureau Chief for the New York Times. In 1934, Duranty won a Pulitzer for his work covering the Soviet Union. Later, Duranty would be criticized for his denial of mass starvation in the Ukraine. The New York Times would later print that Duranty’s deliberate whitewashing of Soviet genocide was “some of the worst reporting to appear in this newspaper”. Despite calls to return the Pulitzer Duranty had won for them, the New York Times has yet to do so.

The Contemporary Quickening

“It is one thing to bias the news, or have a biased view. It is another thing to specifically decide that you will not tell the American people information they have a right to know…” — Pat Caddell

While journalism has had its highs and lows since the days of Walter Duranty, it has usually at least tried to appear objective. Even when articles have had a decidedly liberal slant, they never usually went completely off the cliff. Over the past 10–15 years or so, something seems to have changed.

Pat Caddell, a lifelong Democrat and public opinion pollster who worked for the Carter administration, once stated the following during a speech at an Accuracy In Media conference —

My argument when I speak to the press is very simple — One day you’re going to get my combination of George Wallace an Huey Long running for public office. He’s going get up….an point out ‘how the press is going to get me’ and ‘let me tell you what they’re going to say about me because they want to stop me’.

We’re sliding toward a system…by establishing the fact that the press has in fact prostituted themselves in service of a political party or a political candidate….”

One could be forgiven for thinking that Caddell said this at some point during the Presidential election of 2016, but you might be shocked to learn that he actually made these comments all the way back in 2012 at the height of the Benghazi scandal.

Benghazi seemed to be a tipping point for some a lot of people. You had the press willingly, and blatantly, doing everything in their power to protect a narrative spun by the Obama administration, even in the face of contradictory evidence and statements from the LIBYAN PRESIDENT HIMSELF. When the “anti-muslim youtube video” narrative about the cause of the attack collapsed, the blatant violation of ethics by a media in collaboration with a Democrat administration was laid bare. Not only had liberal journalists lobbed softballs at Obama during his entire term, they never dared to ask serious questions about legitimate scandals (scandals they still deny exist to this day) that occurred during the Obama admin, like “Operation Fast and Furious” and the IRS targeting conservative nonprofits.

Past the Point of No Return

In the campaign leading up to the 2016 Presidential Election, I had started noticing some extremely disturbing trends. The media not only seemed to actively root for a Hillary Clinton victory, but they practically worshiped the ground she walked on. For example, take a look at this picture taken of her campaign press corps on board her airplane. Look specifically at their faces —

What you see here isn’t an objective, Free Press reporting from the campaign trail. What you see is fawning adulation by a group of media elites who had already anointed Clinton the heir apparent.

When Clinton lost the election, the mask of even a sliver of objectivity completely slipped. I sat there aghast on election night, after Trump was declared victor, as CNN correspondent Van Jones called Trump’s victory a “whitelash” against 8 years of a black man being President. Trump had not yet come out to give his victory speech, and media members were already saying this election was due to racism. I couldn’t believe the infantile temper tantrum I was witnessing. Major news media correspondents emotionally overreacting in a manner that left little doubt that the vast majority of them had desperately wanted Clinton to win. Things only got worse from there.

In the days after November 8th, American citizens witness a collaborated effort to reverse a legitimate democratic election, spearheaded by media and Hollywood elites. They no longer made any attempt to hide their bias. They also no longer made any effort to hide their contempt for anyone outside their coastal, elitist bubbles. This was the point, in my opinion, where the treason of the Free Press became complete.

Et tu, Brute?

The election of Donald Trump, and the press reaction to it, has exposed a harsh truth — the Free Press no longer serves the American people. The Free Press is the only American institution that does not have a system of checks & balances, because it was established to protect the people from power. Now, the Free Press protects the power from the people. I can think of no greater betrayal in all of civilized history than this. The people are now left with no one to help them fight against the elites, since all the elites (society, academia, media, and political) are allied against them.

For the record, don’t think that the media is only protecting liberal elites. For example, take this story from Jesse Kelly

Kelly is an Iraq War veteran who ran for Congress in 2010. While Kelly was running for a House of Representatives seat, at the same time, John McCain was facing a primary opponent for Senate seat. Kelly and McCain’s opponent both ran on a Tea Party platform. One particular Political Action Committee (PAC) endorsed both Kelly and McCain’s opponent. McCain apparently instructed one of his staffers to make baseless accusations of that PAC having ties to “neo-Nazis”. No evidence supporting the claim, just the accusation alone. Not only had an incumbent Republican made baseless accusations of neo-Nazi ties, but the typically leftist press actually got on board and boosted the story for him —

Not only has the Free Press overwhelmingly promoted leftist candidates and causes, they’ve also shown a willingness to promote and support entrenched, establishment candidates hellbent on keeping power at all costs.

Democracy Dies in Darkness, and Journalists Extinguished the Light

It has become perfectly clear that a Free Press no longer exists in the United States of America. While some new, small media outlets exist, there is no longer an institution in place to defend Americans from powerful elites. The ‘Free’ Press has abandoned very principles it was founded upon. What’s shocking, to me, is the hubris with which they do this. I’m not sure if it’s deliberate, or a blinding unearned arrogance that allows journalists honestly believe they are above reproach.

The danger, for them, is that they still cannot (or will not) understand just how many Americans absolutely loathe them. Just how many Americans see right through their lies. Just how many Americans are quickly reaching the point where they will no longer tolerate being talked down to, being condescended to, by this class of simpering elites who think they know whats best for every American. This spineless caste of pretentious braggarts who disdain all those who would dare question their ‘betters’. They should have seen the signs with the reaction to the Gianforte Body Slam incident, but they refuse to believe that they could ever be in the wrong.

I fear that this is all reaching a flash point, and we’re sitting on a powder keg. The reaction to Trump’s response to the violence in Charlottesville has been telling. The media have doubled (and tripled) down on painting not only all Trump supporters as White Supremacists, but anyone who would dare continue to vote republican in the next elections. They ignore the face that, according to polling, the majority of Americans think that Trumps response was adequate. What this should tell the media elite is that their message is failing. Spectacularly. But they simply refuse to see it. At the same time, they’re finally coming out and giving full-throated support to radical leftist violence from Marxist terror groups like Antifa. They have no idea how this is playing in middle America.

The ‘Free’ Press is playing a very dangerous game. They refuse to listen to reason. They do this at their own peril.

So be it.
