Magic Leap — An Adventure In Mixed Reality: The Four Pillars | Change Is Imminent

Magic Leap — An Adventure In Mixed Reality: The Four Pillars | Change is Imminent
Games, Media, Communication, Information — The Four Pillars of Mixed Reality

Right, so let’s start off at the beginning. A very fine place to start. Games.

Part I, Games: “Shall we play a game?”

I remember Graeme Devine saying at #DICE2017:

“How about a nice game of chess?” — WarGames, 1983
“The worlds are much more beautiful, the graphics are much more stunning, but the world is still on the other side of a piece of glass where I play as Master Chief or Lara Croft. The challenge of mixed reality is to move game design on again, and it’s really hard because now the games happen on our side of the piece of glass, in our homes, to us directly, or at least the very cool ones will.”

Part I: Games, “Shall we play a game?”

What you just witnessed was the original concept video done by Magic Leap For hiring purposes back in March of 2015, when Magic Leap was in stealth mode. It was Dr. Grordbort’s Shoot-’em-up game concept, which takes a real ray-gun, and manipulates the flow of photons within the light-field surrounding the wearer’s eye using the device to make it seem as though, the player just entered a gunfight against robots. And, this is just one of many game concepts that can be applied to our upcoming mixed reality revolution.

“From where you’re kneeling must seem like an 18-Karat run of bad luck. Truth is, the game was rigged from the start.” — Benny, Fallout New Vegas (2010)
The Real ray-gun is supposed to look something along the lines of this below.
“There are no dangerous weapons; there are only dangerous men.” — Starship Troopers

While the picture above may seem fantastically science fiction, It will be something like what you will be holding, it is closer to reality to than one may dare to dream. In fact I believe many of you people that followed the news on Magic Leap thus far, should have seen the video I opened with. It is without a doubt, the point which Rony Abovitz best described it:

The ray-gun is referred to as a totem or magic object for those that want to keep it simple.

Totems are more or less magic objects that interact with the superimposed environment you viewed through the Magic Leap One. A totem is actually a physical world object that serves as the “skeleton” of the MxRL (Mixed Reality Light-Field) surrounding the object. Any object will do as long the shape conforms with the identity of the polygons. you can use anything from AirSoft, Nerf, or (for you Nintendo Fans) “The Zapper”.

Admit it, we ALL wanted to shoot the dog. — Duck Hunt, (1984) Nintendo Entertainment System

And, to be honest, this game probably is the duck hunt of Mixed Reality. However, even if you don’t have a gun controller or such. You can always do it the old-fashioned way that kids have done gunfights ever since the 1950s: as shown imagined by a small promo for the Xbox 360.

“No matter how old we are, our inner child always comes out to play.” — Jonathan Small, (Creative writer, hobbyist, a close friend of mine, and my editor) HUGE shout-out to him.

See what I did there? While Totems will indeed play a large role in how the Magic Leap works, it’s a story for another day.

It seems safe to say gaming as a whole, will skyrocket into newer frontiers with the Magic Leap. Console Gaming, PC Gaming better watch out for this third player. While it’s insane to think that Screen-based games are not going to die out anytime soon, this newer more portable alternative will break the barrier that has long separated gamers from games.

“Let us think the unthinkable, let us do the undoable, let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.” — DirkGently’s Holistic Detective Agency

Another fine example of gaming in MR made famous by Chief Gaming Wizard, Graeme Devine is Ghost Girl. Mr. Devine describes this as a ghost that follows you around the house and teaches you various things like how to do a card trick or how to sword fight with a skeleton, all in a hallway of your own house. You can then practice it to show your friends. In “Ghost Girl” you are literally solving a crime in your own home.

When you work on something that combines both the spectacular and the relatable, the hyperreal and the real, it suddenly can become supernatural. The hypothetical and the theoretical can become literal. — J. J. Abrams

But beyond simple party tricks and impressive feats, Ghost Girl has much more to offer. Since she is a ghost trapped between worlds, she is unable to ascend until she is put to rest. You must find out what happened to her in order for her to move on. All jokes and theories aside, “Ghost Girl” actually sounds like it could be of this very nature and plot.

“Excellent! I cried. “Elementary,” said he. — Sherlock Holmes
  • And that’s why games will take our new augmented senses by storm!

Part II, “In Other News: The Media”

““We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” — Walt Disney

Part II, “In Other News: The Media”

Pictured above: A 3-Dimensional image of a holographic floating T.V. with people surrounding it watching a sports game outside in the neighborhood.

Out with the old — In with the new?! I don’t think so! At least not yet! And we better hope that’s not the case! This is necessary if anything for mass adoption to take off for Magic Leap.

I mean didn’t you love the idea of the smartphone when it first arrived? The age of the 2-Dimensional Flat panel screens is almost over! Enter the “New Age” — The Age of the HoloWeb!

We first got our news from the Town Criers and the couriers, then we got the Newspaper, and as technology advanced we moved on from the Print to the Telegraph and then the Radio. By the 1940s we sat in theaters to see film reels cut together, with a modest sense of patriotism from characters such as Donald Duck and Bugs Bunny advocating to buy War Bonds (what a weird time to be alive). By the 1950s, Technology marched onwards to have the Theater be seen in the comfort of your own living room with the Television. And despite the advancement, we all forget that it was only in the 1990s that the Information Age first began. Nearly 30 years later, we’ve only begun to step away from the Printing Press, the Radio Transceivers, the Cable Boxes, and are still gripped to our Monitors, gazing upon the unfolding story of the new Sixth Age in the Media evolution with Magic Leap, Inc.

Televisions, Pages, even Web Pages: All of them have boundaries that you have to maneuver around in order to see what’s what in the Media. With Magic Leap, the news is no longer bound by the screen or page in terms of size and scope.

In our new HoloWeb, the 21st Century we’ve dreamed about will become more of a reality when it comes to the Media.

With Magic Leap, you have full control over the size of the media: no scrolls, no screens, no Print!

It’s all in your hands… LITERALLY! Just maneuver with your own arms to see which segment of an article to see next without having to use the scroll of a mouse or the flip of a newspaper.

“Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.” ― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
“Six by nine. Forty two.” “That’s it. That’s all there is.” “I always thought something was fundamentally wrong with the universe” ― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
“The EyePhone’ represented by episode SE6E3 of Futurama,— Attack Of The Killer App
“The News is in: We have 3D News!”

Part III, Communication: “Is this thing on?”

“To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others.” — Anthony Robbins

Part III, Communication: “Is this thing on?”

One of Magic Leap’s latest public demos starts by displaying a few ways we could communicate better whilst living our lives through thelens of the photonics chip. It shows us that from the viewer's perspective we are a humble Cooper from Interstellar, a 2014 American film directed by Director Christopher Nolan, screenplay by Jonathan Nolan, and Christopher Nolan whose main cast consisted of film stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain.

“Climbing Mount Everest” by Murphy Cooper from Interstellar?

It is clear that Rony Abovitz draws inspiration from “Interstellar” for the plot of his public YouTube demo of Magic Leap.

Also notable in the demo is when the video opens up, we get to see that Seth wants “Dinner later”, as portrayed in the Hangouts app.

Magic Leap | Demos: Waking Up with Mixed Reality

We also get to see “RE: Neal’s in Town!” from the Gmail app.

Just knowing that you could wake up one day, put the glasses back on, and view messages left by friends, emails from your family, and who is receiving a Promotion from work today: all of this without the hassle of turning on a desktop or tapping on a phone.

Some such examples of how to communicate better with Magic Leap could be Telepresence, or as the sci-fi buffs would call it Virtual Distant Communication. The Magic Leap One could allow us the use of mixed reality technology, especially for remote control of machinery or for apparent participation in distant events. With the use of MR, you can better manage electronic devices without even leaving the comfort of your own couch. But don’t worry folks, you’re NOT going to end up like Homer Simpson when he went “King-Sized”.

“The new obese Homer operates the computer from the couch with his reaching broom.” | But don’t worry, Magic Leap encourages the exercise of all sorts. S7E7, The Simpsons — “King-Size Homer”

Just look at this image and BAM, You should get a general idea!

“Close your eyes. Feel it. The light…it’s always been there. It will guide you.” — Maz Kanata, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

From Interstellar (2014)
Young Murph: Why did you and mom name me after something that’s bad?
Cooper: Well, we didn’t.
Young Murph: Murphy’s law?
Cooper: Murphy’s law doesn’t mean that something bad will happen. It means that whatever *can* happen, will happen. And that sounded just fine to us.

In this famous quote from the 2014 movie that legions loved and tons appreciated, I too believe It is best to describe Murphy’s Law in this way. Because as it’s stated Murphy’s Law by very nature means the following:

“Murphy’s law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”
  • And, giving it a positive outlook means all the difference in the world.

PSA: Before you read part IV, I thought I’d take a moment of your time to include the discord server link for #MixedReality Where we have a very fun community (and I even help moderate) It’s a fun place to talk about mixed reality and magic leap alike as well as ALL things #MixedReality. If you feel game here’s the discord server link and be sure to read the rules first when you enter. We are a friendly community. and appreciate the golden rule. Here ya go:

In the information age, you don’t teach philosophy as they did after feudalism. You perform it. If Aristotle were alive today he’d have a talk show. — Timothy Leary

The Fifth Age of communication was the Information Age, Translators can decipher written messages written in a wide variety of languages digitally. From the commonplace French and Chinese. To the fantastical Elvish and Atlantean. Even the fictional Klingon and Mando’a have been analyzed and translated in full thanks to numerous people offering distinct resources shared between on another instantaneously on a global scale.

File sharing should be a blast or a boom, considering your outlook toward it. Sharing your photos, videos, even your how your birthday is going in real-time. These are just some of the ways we can share information about what goes on in a day in the life of Magic Leap.

Photons be Free. — USS Voyager EMH, (Emergency Medical Hologram) Year 2378

Sharing your photos and sorting your files should be as easy as flicking your wrist: a snap and done. Videos can be captured through the photonics chip. With just one hand, you can catalog and sort out your lists from chores, groceries, and business schedules while allowing for multilingual editing.

This was also depicted in a many earlier podcasts as instant translation, in other words, speech to text through captions over your HUD.

And even Rony Agrees.

“So it’s like they’re There minus the atoms, which is really cool.” — Rony Abovitz WIRED Magazine public talk With Jessi Hempel, June 2016 | Quote is at 28:04 timestamp
“If you think about where can go from just something like that, uh, we were talking about Threepio, and It was a Threepio that has REAL Threepio intelligence. Since he speaks 10,000 languages and Bocce and Mandarin. And he’s there with you throughout today and explaining the world to you. And that seems like a much friendlier way of introducing things like A.I. to your life. ‘Cuz ’he’s a good character. you know he’s not gonna do bad things. He’s not gonna take your persona information. He’s your friend.”

So… I guess that’s all for today guys. See you next time in the next exciting episode of “Magic Leap — An Adventure in Mixed Reality”!

  • I hope it comes before Half-Life 3 releases. =)
