George R.R. Martin was born in September 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. He is best known for writing the book series that inspired the award-winning series “Game of Thrones.” However, his writing career and involvement with film and TV began years earlier.

The Early Years

As a youth, Martin became interested in the fantasy and horror genres. He wrote and sold his fantastical stories to childhood friends. While in high school, he developed a love for the superheroes found in Marvel Comics. After graduation, Martin earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Northwestern University. Although opposed to the Viet Nam War, he became a VISTA volunteer.

During the 1970s, the author wrote and sold science fiction stories and attended science fiction conventions. He also taught English and journalism at Clarke University. Martin won the Hugo Award in 1973 for his story entitled “With Morning Comes Mistfall.” The award would be the first of many he would receive.

Hollywood Calls

In 1982, he published “Fevre Dream.” The story revolved around vampires along the Mississippi River region during the 19th century. His talent attracted the attention of influential people in Hollywood, which led Martin to become the writer/producer of the television shows “Twilight Zone,” “Max Headroom” and “Beauty and the Beast. ”

He began teaching writing workshops in the 1990s. Thoughts of new future novels continually occupied his mind. Inspired by the stories, “Ivanhoe,””The Accursed King” and the “War of the Roses,” Martin wrote “The Game of Thrones.” He initially envisioned the story spanning over three novels. However, his creation grew into seven books. “Fire & Blood” was the last of the series and was published in November of 2018.

In 2007, HBO bought the rights to “A Song of Ice and Fire.” In April 2011, the cable channel introduced the “Game of Thrones” to the public. Martin became a co-executive producer and writer for the show. The first season won 13 Emmy Awards.

The award-winning author regularly attends comic and science fiction conventions to interact with fans and other artists of the genres. Martin is also an avid baseball fan. When not writing and meeting fans, he and his wife support and raise funds for the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
