What Pepsi got wrong in their commercial with Kendall Jenner
I have been hearing about the banned Pepsi ad. So I decided to watch and judge myself.
After watching it, I believe I understand why a lot of people were ticked off by it.
I will break it down into two different parts.
- Pepsi
- Kendall Jenner
Pepsi
They are most likely aware of the different rallies such as the black lives matter and protest against police brutality amongst a lot others that pertain to either race, gender, religion, LGBT rights, domestic violence e.t.c
The affected people have been subjected to either living in fear, losing a loved one(s), being ripped of a feeling of equality and relevance and have finally been provoked to either a peaceful/violent march.

Unlike depicted in the Pepsi ad where everyone seems to be having the time of their life, these protests are not a walk in the park. Most times it comes at a risk of the protesters life, as captured in CNN news most times.
They showed a lack of sensitivity for a cause so big that lives have been lost in the process. They over simplified what these rallies actually are and the extent to which people are fighting for their basic human rights.
They saw an opportunity to exploit a race war and advertise their drink using a public figure who obviously has a lot of fans.
Now, using a white privileged was a clear disregard for a cause they have no empathy towards.
Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner is a white privileged that has never demonstrated any sympathy(hoping for empathy would be a long shot) towards any of the cause.
She has a fan base so huge that a simple sign of disapproval of any form of criticism either towards race, gender, sexuality or any other cause could go a long way in affecting how a good percentage of her fan base would act tomorrow and how they would feel.
Young Jenner most likely saw this as another star on her shoulder, bragging rights, something to boost her career.
If she cares so little about the obvious hardship a component of her fan base and viewers are going through, then she has no right to be cast in such a powerful ad.
There is no wonder that a lot of people who have been directly affected by these inequalities are offended by such insensitivity.
