I am not for the same decade as your good self but am from a similar background, only at the opposite side of the country. Still, talking to my older friends and family I found mentality to be exactly the same as what you described. I hadn’t thought of it as a big ‘fuck you’ but after reading that it made me smile as you hit the nail on the head.
