4K Television is taking the Next Step in Becoming the Standard Bearer
Television technology is growing at an exponential rate. New high definition televisions are entering the market with even more options than the units that hit the shelves last month. The reason is clear. Television manufacturers have to upgrade their units continually to sell more televisions. Without new features and gadgets, their sales would stagnate, and they would lose market share. Today’s LCD television has a half-life of 50,000 hours. So how do you convince a consumer to buy a new TV? When the one they have will last for another ten years. You add more features and new gadgets that make the television seem revolutionary.
But there is a truly revolutionary unit that is taking over the HD television market — the 4K T.V. The 4K television is a set that offers four times the resolution of a 1080P television. The resolution and clarity are unsurpassed by any other “conventional” HD sets. Most 4K sets utilize a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. The technology is known as Ultra High Definition or UHD. This UHD format is the one most targeted towards consumers, as it offers the resolution that is most accepted by online service providers. There is also Full Ultra HD, which offers a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels.
The biggest hurdles that 4K television had to jump was availability and affordability. Some current models of 4K televisions cost more than $7,000, which may be just a tad out of range for the current HD set buyer. But recent technological advances has allowed manufacturers to bring down the price of 4K television into a real where the average consumer would consider purchasing. While most large screen units still sell for about $3000 and up, smaller units are now available for under $1000. The drop in price has many an HD enthusiast enthralled, but there is still the issue of available programming. Currently, there is only a handful of content providers that broadcast in 4K, but the list is growing. As the consumer 4K market grows, broadcasters will have to grow with it. For it is the future of HD television.
Samsung has recently announced that they will begin shipping UHD 4K monitors for under $700. To be accurate, this is a 28” 10 bit 4K UHD monitor — not quite the 55” and bigger that most consumers are looking for, but it’s a start. This price drop is not exclusive to the smaller sets or just one manufacturer. Many other manufacturers are now offering special pricing or package and bundle deals with the purchase of a 4K unit. The reason for this is clear — 4K will be the new standard bearer when it comes to high-definition television.
Television broadcasters are oblivious to the desires of consumers wanting more and more high definition. Companies like Netflix and YouTube are now broadcasting content in 4K and intend to add more in the future. The list of providers of 4K content will continue to grow and expand within the coming months. To further promote 4K content over broadcast television, Sony and FIFA announced that they will work together on a range of 4K broadcasts for the World Cup and plan to produce several matches in 4K Ultra HD.
With manufactures working with content producers to offer a wide variety of 4K content, these groups intend to showcase and promote more of the 4K sets as the next logical step in the evolution of consumer HD television. As more and more Ultra HD content is being produced, more consumers will clamor to purchase the new 4K units. By reducing the price and increasing the features of these new units, coupled with the 4K production partnerships, manufacturers are hoping that their 4K technology will become the new standard for HD consumption.
