While there is no doubt people tend to put to much value in stuff over interaction. I feel for you and am saddened that there was so little to your relationship that his stuff is meaningless. 
But even more so that you SEEM to perceive the cleaning out of his stuff as erasing his existence in your life. 
If that is true, I am also pretty sure it will not work. Your memories of him will remain long after the ashes of the burn are spread to the far corners of the earth. 
And I do hope you find peace as a far as your relationship with him. That is far more important than any stuff.
