Sesame Place Theme Park Under Scrutiny For Ignoring Black Children (Video)
Will Elmo Be Cancelled For His Friends’ Racist Micro-aggressions?
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street? And can you let me know if they are racist?
We’ve been trusting Sesame Street to educate children since 1969, and hundreds of thousands of fans have even had the chance to visit Sesame Place theme parks, which have been operating for more than 40 years.
They’ve kept a moderately low profile, but Sesame Place’s Philadelphia location is in the news this week, having been caught on video snubbing and mistreating children of color.
The scandal began with a viral video of two little black girls watching a parade, waving, and reaching for “Rosita,” a seafoam-green muppet. In the video, the character appears to high-five a white woman as she walks past, then wags her finger at someone and waves off the two little black girls instead of simply high-fiving them.
Now, even in a six-foot-tall furry costume, the gesture is quite clearly dismissive. That said, it’s not uncommon to see companies downplay things as unintentional in order to save face. It’s no surprise that Sesame Place first issued a statement trying to put out the fire.
