This is my secret recipe to immerse yourself in the beauty world; all you need are two B.L.T.S! Wait what? I bet you are thinking “I thought this was a beauty blog?” It is! This is the acronym I made up to remember what I needed when I was starting off and it made it impossible to forget … I don’t even eat bacon.

B.L.T.S #1

Base

The secret to flawless makeup is primed and hydrated skin! It is so important to take care of the base of all your makeup, so before you start investing in the items mentioned below, make sure you have invested in your skin because it’s the only constant in all of this!

Lighting

When starting to do your makeup make sure you are in a well-lit environment as to not get any harsh application or mismatched colours, if you don’t have bright light don’t despair! You can invest in a soft light box mirror like this one, which is one of the affordable makeup mirrors.

Tools

Have the right tools! They don’t have to be the expensive Beauty Blender ™ or Sigma brushes, this is what I started with and it’s really all you need to start experimenting with makeup:

  1. An inexpensive good quality brush set with different brushes which you can get from a brand like BH Cosmetics here
The 18 necessary brushes

2. Any beauty sponge because it will help reduce the cake-y look if you accidently apply a little too much makeup, you can get the affordable RealTechniques beauty miracle sponge here

Shade / tone

Invest time in finding your right shade in foundation and in concealer. Nothing will ruin the look quicker than mismatched base colour! No one wants to look like an Oompa Loompa, yikes. If you love the sun and getting a tan then invest in two shades, ideally your true shade and the shade u tan too, so that you always have your colour on hand! Don’t be afraid of mixing different colours to get your perfect shade. Foundation should match your neck colour for a seamless transition and your concealer can be your exact shade for spot coverage or a shade lighter to brighten your face.

No one wants their foundation to look like this

B.L.T.S #2

Blending

Blend, blend, blend until your arm falls off or you get killer toned limbs; there isn’t a mistake that can’t be fixed by blending. Blending which is the motion or repeatedly goes over the same spot with a brush or a beauty sponge to diffuse any pigment deposited on the skin. It helps give the airbrushed look and is the trick that the makeup artists swear by. Practising blending is what really will improve your makeup application.

Layering

There are no rules to make up; do what makes you happy! EXCEPT, putting liquids and creams over powders. That just ruins your application and makes it all crumble like when u add water to flour. So always remember creams and liquids then powders.

Technique

Everyone has their own way, whether it’s the order in which you do your make up starting with eyes or skin or brows, or using tape to get a sharp wing, this is trial and error and constant practice until you learn what techniques and tricks work best for you. Never give up after the first time, keep trying until you get it right.

Shape

Know your face, eyes, brows, lip and nose shape, and find makeup artists with the same feature/features. Those will help you learn what the most flattering makeup tips for your features are.

So now that BLTS are covered I just want to clarify some of the vocabulary you might encounter in the beauty sphere…

Dupes: Products that are identical in either colour, formula or texture, usually said about more affordable options when compared to high end makeup.

Collaborations: Could mean a partnership with a brand or a partnership with a fellow influencer where they guest star in each other’s social medias.

Matte: refers to any colour devoid of shine, found in lipsticks, foundations and powders.

Pigment: how much colour there is in a product and how effective it is at covering and concealing.

Beat Face: refers to a made-up face, derived from the fact that to blend with a beauty sponge one would tap their face repeatedly with the sponge.

Baking: using translucent powder (powder that doesn’t show on the skin due to being finely milled) over your cream and liquid makeup to make sure it doesn’t budge.
