Quick take: Combined performance summary for August 2016

By John Appleby

As Nigel Edwards noted in our statement on this month’s Combined Performance Summary from NHS England:

Today’s figures mark over a year since the NHS met its commitment to admit or transfer 95% of people attending A&E within four hours. Despite great effort from staff, and heavy pressure from the service’s leaders, only a small handful of hospitals now hit the target.

For quite some time now, each month I’ve been updating charts to keep track of A&E performance off the back of these announcements.

The first one confirms the statement above is technically correct, but that the NHS really only met the target for one month in the last two years in July 2015.

The other charts show that activity levels last August are closer to something we’d expect to see in December.
