MY 50 FAVOURITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

I bet some people will see this and think, “Oh, I saw that coming!” LOL

The truth is, I don’t really watch movies all that much or at least, as much as I would like to anyway. I enjoy them immensely and find it relaxing and extremely satisfying to be able to disappear into another world for a few minutes and escape my own. Even if it is for that brief time.

So yes, I have seen a few movies in my time. This list here is a compilation of my favourite movies of all time. They range across different genres and I like them for different reasons, some of which you may not totally agree with but hey… you’re free to compile your own :)

At first, I was going to compile a list of 100 but then I figured that would be a bit much yeah? So, here they are… my 50 top movies of all time in no particular order except for number 1, of course :)

Please note: I say amazing and epic too much in this writeup. Bear with me :) :)

  1. LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY

Director: Peter Jackson

Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Liv Tyler, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, Sean Bean, Cate Blanchett…

My best movie of all time. It is no surprise they won ELEVEN awards at the Academy awards that year. Everything worked in this movie. Everything. The soundtracks, the costume, the stage setting, the acting, the storyline….everything. I have watched them all more times than I can count, something that made my brother very unhappy at one point. Lol. But this movie is really everything. Seriously!

2. AKEELAH AND THE BEE

Director: Doug Atchison

Starring; Keke Palmer, Laurence Fishburne, Angela Basset

Another movie I have watched too many times to mention. People who know me will know this was bound t make my top 10. I absolutely adore this movie and it inspired me to commence hosting a statewide spelling competition which has been ongoing for about 4 years now. Amazing movie really.

3. A WALK TO REMEMBER

Director: Adam Shankman

Starring: Mandy Moore, Shane West

I have never read any Nicholas Sparks book but going by the movies, the books (which are usually better than their adaptations) must be something else. I don’t typically do romance but this is a story that stands ou2t. A tale of love, courage, survival, loyalty, values. Even though, the Notebook is more popular, I think this movie is the far better Nicholas Sparks adaptation. I cried buckets.

4. THE LINCOLN LAWYER

Director: Brad Furman

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe

Okay, this movie is making my list simply on the strength of Mathew McConaughey’s acting. The man is crazy talented and his delivery in this movie is sooo good. A must watch

5. THE FACULTY

Director: Robert Rodriguez

Starring: Elijah Wood, Clea Duvall, Josh Hartnett

I love this movie. Simple plot and totally epic acting. Old now but I would still sit down to watch it anyday. Awesome.

6. NAKED WEAPON

Director: Tony Ching

Starring: Maggie Q, Anya Wu, Daniel Wu

Absolutely amazing story with some of the best fight scenes I have ever seen in any movie.

7. NOW YOU SEE ME

Director: Louis Leterrier

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Michael Caine

I don’t think I need to say too much about this one. From the very first scene, you are drawn into the action and it stays at the same pace all through. The movie exceeded my expectation at every point. And the plot twist at the end. EPIC. My best movie of 2013 alongside THE CALL.

8. THE CALL

Director: Brad Anderson

Starring: Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin

One word for this movie is INTENSE! Most intense movie I have ever seen in my life and so real. I have never been more scared watching a movie before. Ties with NOW YOU SEE ME for best movie of 2013.

9. ANASTASIA

Director: Don Bluth, Gary Goldman

Starring: Meg Ryan, John Cusack

My fave animation of all time. I love the music and the humor. So good.

10. THE ORPHAN

Director: Jaume Collet-Serra

Starring: Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman

The plot twist in this movie is amazing and the depth of evil is both total and shocking. I love horror movies and this one is so good because it could happen to anybody. Do not watch this movie if you want to adopt a kid!

11. THE GREAT DEBATERS

Director: Denzel Washington, Jurnee Smollett, Nate Parker, Forest Whitaker, Denzel Whitaker

Starring: Denzel Washington, Jurnee Smollett, Nate Parker, Forest Whitaker, Denzel Whitaker

I recommend this movie to everybody! Amazing, inspirational and educative. We can fight without arms. I love everybody in this movie and Denzel Washington is beyond amazing.

12. EDGE OF TOMORROW

Director: Doug Liman

Starring: Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise

I didn’t like Tom Cruise until I saw this movie. I didn’t really notice Emily Blunt until I saw this movie and she became my favourite actress. My best movie of 2014. It’s that good! I keep yelling, “Come find me when you wake up!” at random times in the house and my sister yells, “Shut up!” right back. :D :D

13. THE AGE OF ADALINE

Director: Lee Toland Krieger

Starring: Blake Lively, Harrison Ford

Another movie which makes the cut solely on the strength of one of its cast. Blake Lively is amazing in this movie. Amazing. I love all of her outfits across the generations. Elegant lady. Classic movie.

14. KUNGFU PANDA

Creator: Dreamworks Animation

Starring: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Michelle Yeoh

All the movies in this franchise are awesome. Hilarious, my belly always aches from laughing so hard. I love the wisdom sprinkled all through the movie.

15. THE WAY BACK

Director: Peter Weir

Starring: Colin Farell, Jim Sturgess, Saoirse Ronan, Ed Harris

Amazingly sad movie and based on a true story to boot. Many people might find it boring but I was entranced. Jim Sturgess, Colin Farell, Saoirse Ronan … Extremely extremely good acting by everyone on the cast. Amazing really.

16. KUNGFU HUSTLE

Director: Stephen Chow

Starring: Stephen Chow

I have seen this movie like a million times and I plan to see it a million more. Okay, I exaggerate but you get my drift. Hilarious and a really creative character lineup. You will fall in love with most of the characters. The shrieking landlady, the silly hero, his sillier friend, the prissy gay… all amazing, all funny. And the acting is really great. Stephen Chow outdid himself on this one.

17. GOOD WILL HUNTING

Director: Gus Van Sant

Starring: Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Ben Afleck, Stellan Skarsgard, Minnie Driver

I love Matt Damon as you will see his movies appear numerous times on this list. He is such a talented actor and he pairs up with another great on this one, the late Robin Williams. This movie had me stunned. Everyone should absolutely see it.

18. KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

Director: Ridley Scott

Starring: Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson

A tale of courage in unprecedented places. I love this movie. I have seen it so many times. Everyone should see it at least once and it is extremely quotable. I should do a writeup on my favourite quotes from this movie.

19. IGODO

Director: Don Pedro Obaseki

Starring: Sam Dede

Many people will remember this movie. I developed a newfound respect for Nollywood when Igodo was released. Epic storyline and Sam Dede never disappoints but in this one, he truly outshone himself.

20. IJELE

Producer: Sunny Collins

Starring: Genevieve Nnaji, Olu Jacobs, Sam Dede, Eucharia Anunobi, Sam Loco Efe

Another great Nigerian epic story. I can’t really remember the storyline, it mixes up with Igodo in my mind’s eye but I remember being wowed by it. So it stays. Plus Genevieve is in it and one Genevieve movie must be on this list.

21. STOMP THE YARD

Director: Sylvain White

Starring: Ne-yo, Columbus Short, Chris Brown, Meagan Good

I have always loved Columbus Short and even though Chris Brown dies like 2 minutes after the movie commences, I sill think it is an absolutely wonderful movie. A trailblazer for dance movies all over the world in my opinion.

22. 300

Director: Zach Snyder

Starring: Lena Headey, Gerald Butler, Rodrigo Santoro, Michael Fassbender, James McA

My absolute best epic movie of all time. The best fight scenes of all time. The best narration of all time. The best punchlines of all time. The best everything!!!

23. THE X-MEN SERIES

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Hally Berry, Ian Mckellen, Michael Fassbender

There is no installation in the X-Men franchise that ever disappoints. Not one. Every single one is a must see. I have all of them J

24. PITCH PERFECT

Director: Jason Moore

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Skylar Astin

I only refer to Part 1 of this movie, 2 is crap. I wasn’t really expecting much when I started seeing this movie. By the end, it was one of my favourite movies of all time. It has everything… love (I can totally relate to Beca), music, humor… everything. A must watch for everyone.

25. PITCH BLACK AND THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK

Starring: Vin Diesel, Thandie Newton, Karl Urban

Okay. So, I will see everything that has Vin Diesel in it if given the chance even though I acknowledge he is not such a good actor. But Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick are ah-mah-yi-zing! Go watch them NOW!!!

26. CRIMSON RIVERS

Director: Mathieu Kassovitz

Starring: Jean Reno, Vincent Cassel

Thrillers with a reference to a mysterious past are totally my thing and Crimson Rivers has that in abundance. A killer in a University town which has a strict caste system and encourage intra marriage thus spurring inbreeding and increasing mutation within the community. When the story leads to one woman in an asylum who might or might not be really mental…it gets really spine tingling. Most people might not enjoy it as much as I did though.

27. BEAUTIFUL CREATURES

Director: Richard LaGravenese

Starring: Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons

I keep watching this movie over and over and over. Great acting. Cool storyline.

28. THE STONING OF SORAYA M.

Director: Cyrus Nowrasteh

Starring: Jim Caviezel, Mozhan Marno

Extremely sad movie. I cried enough tears to support aquatic life. And the kicker? It Is based on a true story. So sad.

29. CHARLIE’S ANGELS

Director: McG

Starring: Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz

Drew Barrymore is in this movie… need I say more? A true classic

30. THE ODYSSEY

Director: Andrei Konchalovsky

Starring: Armand Assante

My best epic movie of all time until I saw 300. I think this movie is absolutely fantastic. I saw it for the first time in my friend’s house and at the last scene where Odysseus notched the bow, we all stood up and did a victory wiggle round the room. Amazing story with amazing actors but nobody talks about Odysseus committing adultery while in exile as his wife slaves away at home. Hmmmn.

31. BATTLESHIP

Director: Peter Berg

Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson

I love everything about this movie. I never get tired of seeing it. Ashton is amazing in it and Rihanna…..I love her. She rocked that uniform!

32. AVATAR

Director: James Cameron

Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodirguez, Sigourney Weaver

Everytime I write the name of this movie, I feel like it should have an exclamation mark at the end because it is sooooo good! Great acting, great punchlines, great villain. James Cameron outdid himself on this one.

33. DOOMSDAY

Director: Neil Marshall

Starring: Rhona Mitra

So Rhona Mitra as an army major, wearing an eye patch, walking around in a black tank top as she kicks bad people’s butt up and down with a total bad ass attitude is everything. EVERYTHING!

34. SEVEN LUCKY KIDS

After watching this movie like one million times as a child, I wanted to learn karate and kick ass like the little girl in it. Remains a true classic for me.

35. TAKING LIVES

Director: D.J. Caruso

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Ethan Hawke, Kiefer Sutherland

The plot twists in this movie are not any movie’s mate! FBI agent falls in love with the most wanted serial killer of all time in a master chess game but we don’t know who is really winning until the very end. The plot twists and turns and confuses you, then straightens you out and wrings you dry. SPECTACULAR movie!

36. MAD MAX-FURY ROAD

Director: George Miller

Starring: Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, Zoe Kravitz

Take a few handful of actors, take one dry, desolated patch of road and make an amazing movie. Is it possible? Mad Max Fury Road made it not only possible but one of the best movies I have ever seen. Furiosa gives me woman boners! Oops, I didn’t say that.

37. ANGELS AND DEMONS

Director: Ron Howard

Starring: Tom Hanks, Stellan Skarsgard

An adaptation of the Dan Brown novel. A mystery linking the Vatican to the Illuminati with Tom Hanks as History professor is a recipe for all-time favourite movie ever! Tom Hanks is amazing always.

38. PRIVATE VALENTINE, BLONDE AND DANGEROUS

Director: Steve Miner

Starring: Jessica Simpson, Vivica Fox,

I would never have expected that a movie like this would make it to my list but Private Valentine is so hilarious, I couldn’t help it. LMAO!

39. THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU

Director: George Nolfi

Starring: Emily Blunt, Matt Damon,

Take my favourite actress and pair her with Damon and of course I will love the movie. The movie itself doesn’t have a wow factor except for the acting. The chemistry between those 2 was so hot, I kept fanning my TV screen.

40. THE BLIND SIDE

Director: John Lee Hancock

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw

A tale of love beyond boundaries. I love this movie always and forever.

41. TRANSFORMERS

Starring: Shia LaBeouf, Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel

Let me just state that this includes all 3 of the first Transformer movies with Shia LaBeouf ONLY. It does not include the silly movie that Mark Wahlberg did. What an eyesore that was. But for the 3 that came before, Shia and Optimus Prime with Tyrese and Josh Duhamel…. Something else man. Otherworldly.

42. 47 RONIN

Director: Carl Rinsch

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada

I cried at the end of this movie like I was getting paid to do it. Far and away, the best movie Keanu Reeves has ever done in my opinion.

43. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Director: Danny Boyle

Starring: Dev Patel, Frieda Pinto

How hard did I cry, very very hard. I cried for days. My friends laughed at me but I didn’t care. I cried a lot. Amazing movie.

44. 3 IDIOTS

Director: Rajkumar Hirani

Starring: Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan

My best Bollywood movie. Aamir Khan is amazing and this movie had everything. I can watch it over and over and never get bored. The story is simply entrancing and I cannot do it justice here. Just go and see it.

45. NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER

Starring: Jean Claude Van Damme

All 3 of the movies even though they had different actors and different plots are amazing. It is difficult to tell which is best. I kind of have a deep love for the first one but all the others are equally very good. Very old movie though.

46. SOMETIMES IN APRIL

Director: Raoul Peck

Starring: Idris Elba

Add all the tears I cried for all the other movies times two. Man, what a horrendous story. HORRENDOUS! And to imagine that these things actually happened. I salute Rwanda as a country for their courage to pick up after that tragedy to become the prosperous nation they are today. Truly spectacular.

47. ARMAGEDDON

Director: Michael Bay

Starring: Bruce Willis, Ben Afleck, Liv Tyler, Billy Bob Thornton

When you send a crew of dirty talking sailors to outerspace to stop a fast moving body which is headed straight for Earth and one of them has to stay behind to detonate the bomb and perish along with it. I cried like nobody’s business.

48. MULAN

Director: Barry Cook, Tony Bancroft

Starring: Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy

This animation is amazing! Every girl should see it.

49. TRAITOR

Director: Jerry Nachmanoff

Starring: Don Cheadle

This movie is why Don Cheadle is my favourite black actor. I recommend this movie to everyone. Find it and watch it.

50. THE REVENANT

Director: Alejandro G. Inarritu

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy

If you know me, then you know there is no way I am compiling a list of my best movies without this movie on it. Everything about this movie is absolutely astounding. The cast, the directing (Innaritu the king!), the villain, the unfolding plot… everything. Everything. Some people find it boring or too gory or whatever. I love it!

So that’s it!

If you read till the end, chop kiss :* :* :*
