Slowing Down

and creating memories

Hi friends,

I know that earlier this week I discussed rhythm and changing our rhythms for our health. I stumbled on this wonderful TED talk called “In Praise of Slowness.” He makes some truly wonderful points about the speed with which we currently live our lives. I was particularly moved by the fact that bed time stories were his wake up call. Speeding through bedtime rituals and other important moments of childhood can be so tempting. Poetry, songs, books even have been written on the regret related to not spending enough time with our children before they are adults. My high school was on the street “Cats Cradle” and I’ve always wondered if that was a nod to high school being the last stop before we were adults (technically). We all know that it is important to make time for childhood, so why is it so difficult? We struggle so much to make enough time for anything outside of work, or work and school, or work and school and sports and music and theater and etc. etc. etc. etc. Some days we struggle to make sure everyone has simply eaten at least 2 or 3 meals.

I recognize how difficult what I’m discussing is, but it is vital to our own minds, and peace of mind, as well as the developing brains of our children that we slow down, enjoy bedtime stories, and have fun with each other.

This week I encourage you to take the 20 minutes to watch this TED talk http://www.ted.com/talks/carl_honore_praises_slowness, and perhaps look into reading the book. I also encourage you to create memories this week and not to simply rush through the motions.

Keep breathing. Keep laughing. Rest.
