ODSC - Open Data Science
5 min readJun 26, 2020

ODSC West brings out some of the best and brightest minds in AI and data science on the west coast. Researchers from leading institutions and Silicon Valley convene to share their expertise in this important field of study, and always excite attendees with their impressive cutting-edge knowledge. As such, we’re excited to announce the first round of ODSC West 2020 Virtual Conference speakers that you can hear from this October 27–30!

Eric Xing, PhD: Founder & Chief Scientist, Professor | Petuum, Carnegie Mellon University

Prof. Xing has a diverse background in everything data science. The company he founded, Petuum, is a 2018 World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer company that builds standardized artificial intelligence development platforms and operating systems for broad and general industrial AI applications. His main research interests are the development of machine learning and statistical methodology, and large-scale computational systems and architectures, and much more.

Lisa Amini, PhD: Director | IBM Research

Before her role at IBM Research Cambridge, which is also home to the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, and of IBM’s AI Horizons Network. Lisa was previously Director of Knowledge & Reasoning Research in the Cognitive Computing group at IBM’s TJ Watson Research Center in New York, and she is also an IBM Distinguished Engineer. During her time as the founding Director of IBM Research Ireland, and the first woman Lab Director for an IBM Research Global, she developed the strategy and led researchers in advancing science and technology for intelligent urban and environmental systems.

Gill Bejerano, PhD: Professor | Stanford University, Stanford AI Labs

Gill is a member of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence (AI) Laboratory and Bio-X program. He is also a pioneer of Human Genome research. He is the discoverer of “Ultraconserved Elements”, human genomic regions that defy understanding of molecular evolution. He has also done influential work in applying Markovian models to biosequence analysis, and in showing that co-option of junk DNA into functional roles is an under-appreciated force shaping the evolution of the Human Genome.

Suchi Saria, PhD: Professor, Machine Learning & Healthcare | Johns Hopkins University

Saria’s goal as a data scientist is to use sophisticated computer science and the deluge of data available in health care and other settings to individualize patient care and to save lives. Her pioneering work led to her being named one of Popular Science magazine’s “Brilliant 10” (2016); one of MIT’s “35 Innovators Under 35” (2017); and a member of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders (2018).

John Zedlewski: Director, GPU-Accelerated Machine Learning | NVIDIA
John Zedlewski is the director of GPU-accelerated machine learning on the NVIDIA Rapids team. Previously, he worked on deep learning for self-driving cars at NVIDIA, deep learning for radiology at Enlitic, and machine learning for structured healthcare data at Castlight. He has an MA/ABD in economics from Harvard with a focus in computational econometrics and an AB in computer science from Princeton.

Tian Zheng, PhD: Chair, Department of Statistics, Associate Director | Columbia University, Data Science Institute
Prof. Zheng develops novel methods for exploring and understanding patterns in complex data from different application domains such as biology, psychology, climatology, and etc. Her current projects are in the fields of statistical machine learning, spatiotemporal modeling and social network analysis. Her research has been recognized by the 2008 Outstanding Statistical Application Award from the American Statistical Association (ASA), the Mitchell Prize from ISBA and a Google research award.

Dr. Jon Krohn: Chief Data Scientist, Author of Deep Learning Illustrated | Untapt

Jon Krohn is Chief Data Scientist at the machine learning company untapt. He is a leading deep learning author and accomplished instructor with an acclaimed series of tutorials published by Addison-Wesley, including Deep Learning with TensorFlow and Deep Learning for Natural Language Processing. He guest lectures at Columbia University. He holds a doctorate in neuroscience from the University of Oxford and, since 2010, has been publishing on machine learning in leading peer-reviewed journals.

Jennifer Wortman Vaughan, PhD: Senior Principal Researcher | Microsoft Research

Jennifer’s research background is in machine learning and algorithmic economics. Within Microsoft, Jennifer has been leading efforts around transparency, intelligibility, and explanation under the umbrella of Aether, Microsoft’s company-wide initiative focused on responsible AI.

These are just a few of the many amazing speakers that will attend ODSC West 2020 later this year! Expect to see much more on these topics:

Recommendation Systems | Transfer Learning | Machine Vision | Autonomous Machines | Conversational AI | Research | Speech Recognition | Unsupervised Learning | Image Classification | and much, much more.

Stay tuned to this blog and our social media channels for more information on upcoming speakers! Get your ticket by this Friday, June 19 for 70% off before prices go up.
