When I walk into a conversation, I always assume that the other people disagree with me. I’m always surprised when I encounter someone who agrees with me, on anything. Because I’m accustomed to being a minority religiously, politically, socially… I also learned at a young age that when I spoke with people one-on-one, I found much to admire and respect about them; and even if I disagreed with their views, they still had reasons for why they’d arrived at particular conclusions. Disagreeing with them was not the same thing as showing contempt for them.
