Angelique, you are right that traditional marriage “is unnecessary and a very limited way to our existence.” Unfortunately, marriage is the only ticket to more than 1,000 federal perks and protections. Same-sex couples, who couldn’t marry for a long time but already had love, commitment ad sometimes kids, recognized the importance of those perks and protections — it’s why they fought so hard for the right to legally marry. That said, who says anyone needs to marry the “traditional way” ( and actually, there is no one set “traditional marriage” as it has looked different across time and cultures.
