At the end of 2019 — beginning of 2020, ratings of the best buildings of the previous year are usually compiled. Many factors are taken into account — from the location, to the material and innovation in the design or construction approach.

This article has compiled a list of impressive architectural designs for 2019 residential properties. Not all of them won the competitions, but all were nominated and, at least, worthy of attention. Today we look at the list of residential constructions of the world, which caught the eye of the public. Among them:

  1. House L’Arbre Blanc (by Sou Fujimoto)

The project of the White Tree (L’Arbre Blanc) residential complex by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto and the French bureau Nicolas Laisne Associes and Manal Rachdi Oxo Architectes won the Architectural Folie of the 21st Century competition and will be implemented in Montpellier — one of the largest cities in the south of France.

The concept of the 17-story tower was largely influenced by the habit of the inhabitants of the sunny Montpolier to spend most of the time under the open sky. The main distinguishing feature of the project is the huge number of spacious terraces and open balconies located around the vertical base in such a way as to receive the maximum possible amount of daylight, like leaves on tree branches that provide the photosynthesis process.

2. Nhow Amsterdam RAI Hotel (by OMA)

The Nhow Amsterdam Hotel is the main hotel for the RAI Amsterdam Convention and Exhibition Center and the new city office in the fast-growing business district of Amsterdam Zuidas. This is the largest Benelux hotel with a total of 650 rooms. The complex, which includes a restaurant, bar and live television studio.

The facade of the hotel is made of aluminum and filled with glass panels. The building has 24 floors, of which 19 floors are occupied by hotels, on each floor from 24 to 36 rooms.

The hotel lobby is located on two floors, with separately rented retail space on the ground floor and a hotel lounge and a bar on the second floor. On the eastern side of the building there is a place for loading and unloading goods, taxi rank, parking for bus passengers and access to the parking lot in the basement. The two-story basement has 200 parking spaces and places for technical installation.

3. Comfort Town Housing (by archimatika)

The whole complex is designed as a single ensemble, the main motive of which was the use of the archetype of a traditional European city. Architects have moved away from the stereotype of building new neighborhoods with tall buildings. Instead, they created an ensemble resembling the old city.

The general nature of the relief, the average number of storeys, pitched roofs and picturesque silhouettes, cozy streets with perennial trees, quarter buildings, courtyards — all this makes the new district so chamber and cozy. The traditional buildings of such cities as Prague, Krakow, Lviv also served as analogues for the project. I really like it! And you?

4. Philosophers´ Residence (by ARHIS)

Majestic views from panoramic windows, balconies and terraces of apartments on the Daugava River; the highest demands on the quality of construction, interior decoration, energy saving and heat saving systems, planning decisions — all this is about a house built by the Latvian architect Andris Kronbergs — the owner and head of the ARHIS architectural workshop.

The architecture of the building continues the general idea of the quarter, the buildings visually resemble a stack of books stacked on top of each other, where on each floor there is a new book, new content with its own philosophical approach to life (hence the name of the house).

The basis of the color scheme of the architectural concept is the negativity of black and white photography of a pile of books. In the building there are: a library, a basketball court, a ping-pong terrace, a children’s playground, places for meditative relaxation with a view of the Alley of philosophers and the coast of the ancient Daugava.

5. Freebooter Housing (by GG-loop)

World Architecture Festival, WAF recognized Freebooter as the best completed residential project. The Dutch architectural studio GG-loop built in Amsterdam a pair of prefabricated apartments with wooden shutters that allow you to adjust the level of light entering the building.

This unit, dubbed Freebooter, was made of steel and cross-laminated wood (CLT) and was prefabricated off-site. All four floors took three weeks, and the entire project took only six months.

The building, which contains two duplexes, is wrapped in long vertical wooden boards. The building was built using biophilic design principles, which focus on combining architecture with the natural world to improve the lives of people using buildings.

The shape of the Freebooter and the angle of its wooden blinds were arranged according to the analysis of the movement of the sun during the year. The double façade also gives residents privacy, despite floor-to-ceiling glazing.

6. Future Towers (by MVRDV)

In 2018, the Dutch firm MVRDV completed the construction of a huge apartment building in the Indian city of Pune to enclose multi-purpose yards. It was this building that won the `housing` category and became one of the best buildings according to readers of the ArchDaily portal.

The project of the building, which is home to about 5,000 people, is part of the town, created in response to the influx of young professionals moving to Pune to work in the automotive and technological industries.

The growing demand for cheap mass housing has led to significant development in the area, usually including groups of identical tall towers. Nine residential premises vary in height from 17 to 30 floors and are located around four circulating veins. As a result, the reduction in the number of elevators required to service 1,068 apartments resulted in significant cost savings.

6. Morpheus Hotel (by Zaha Hadid Architects)

Morpheus, the new leading hotel for the Macau resort, the city of dreams, won the category `Hotel Architecture` according to the Arch Daily portal. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), the distinctive look of the project is based on the flowing shapes found in the rich tradition of Chinese jade carving. Conceived as a rectangular rectangular hood, a series of voids is carved in the center of the building — this creates what architects describe as a `city window`, a void designed to connect the hotel’s internal public spaces with the city.

When developing the ZHA project, the existing foundations on the site to determine the shape of the 40-story building, whose total height is 160 meters were used. The monolithic block was then `cut out` with voids that give the circuit a dramatic look. These structures also form the hotel’s internal public spaces, creating corner suites with views of the atrium and city.

This arrangement maximizes the number of hotel rooms with breathtaking views and ensures an even distribution of rooms on both sides of the building.
