Diving into the very strange history behind a man who became known as “Captain Trips” highlights just how true the statement truth is stranger than fiction really can be. Alfred Hubbard likely was one of the worlds first modern day psychonauts and is believed to have introduced thousands of people to LSD including Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley, and the Cathedral of the Holy Rosary. He reportedly traded LSD for psilocybin with Leary and experimented with DMT almost 30 years before Rick Strassman’s famous experimental research in the 90’s.

Hubbards’ stranger than fiction story begins as a teenager in the 1920’s when he made waves in the newspapers for allegedly inventing a free energy device. He did demonstrations for investors and the media where he powered a boat with his secretive box. He initially claimed that it pulled energy from the air, but later said that was cover to protect his invention. He later claimed it was nuclear powered. Surprisingly, Hubbard did apparently cut a deal with the Radium Chemical Company to develop the technology. However, it never came to be. Was it all a hoax?
