WASHINGTON (S.J. Newman) — House Republicans voted to repeal an Obama-era regulation that bars gun permits to the mentally ill on disability who are declared financially incompetent.

Garrett J. Tugg III was prevented from obtaining a gun permit under the old law. He now runs a profitable online gun lingerie store from his mother’s basement. Unable to estimate his company’s annual earnings, Tugg said he is “paid in Girl Scout cookies.”

Sen. Mitch McConnell said, “Mentally ill people were blocked from getting guns simply because Democrats cynically raised the bar too high, such as requiring them to be able to distinguish between nickels, quarters, and dimes.”

McConnell said, “It’s rather hypocritical to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable just because they can’t handle their own finances, while six-times bankrupted President Trump is commander-in-chief of the world’s most powerful military.”
