your Happiness is our Burden
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
This is one of — if not the — most known segments of the document that defines life as an American. It has been at the center of political debate from it’s inception and will continue to be so for centuries to come. It is understood deep within us that we may pursue happiness in it’s many forms, but it is misunderstood which path this pursuit of happiness may take us as a people.
Here we see a group of humans pursuing happiness together. This image is not so different from what we see in online forums, television and print news, and even the impassioned displays that take place on the streets in the form of protest. That truth scares me. The truth that - in humanity’s search for happiness - many of us choose a path that is a deep burden on the rest of us. In politics and philosophy, this path is the path of ignorance.
We are all familiar with the term “ignorance is bliss” — and it is undoubtably true. A severe lack of understanding allows for humans to imagine our own understanding in which anything is possible and we are always right. Using this imagined reality to fill the void where knowledge should be, brings us happiness in the same way heroin brings the addict happiness and is easy to get addicted to.
Why put time and effort into creating a sustainable life for yourself when you can quickly and cheaply get happiness in your needle?
Why put time and effort into learning and understanding the reality of complicated situations when you can effortlessly forge your own narrative and pretend you have a complete understanding of such complex situations?
This happiness is humanity’s burden. Blissful ignorance is too addicting and in a world where we work tirelessly to make things simpler for us — blissful ignorance becomes increasingly appealing.
