I don’t want to get too in the weeds about this, but I have problems with this part of your article.
From what I can tell, the argument here is that alt-right is defined as as pushing for an all-white ethnostate. However, you can be a white nationalist without being alt-right by that definition.
The Southern Poverty Law Center defines white nationalism as “white supremacy” or “white separatism.” He has (and does) advocate for white separatism.
Here it is, archived: http://archive.is/JtEAY
He hasn’t repudiated these views; that requires for one to point to past statements and say “I no longer believe this and here’s why.” I haven’t seen this. (Maybe someone else has?)
Honestly, the only reason he can say he’s secretly a white nationalist is because he has, for whatever reason, decided he wants to hide his affiliation. Most people believe it to be a strategic move.
Additionally, on his article “Is Mike Cernovich Part of the Alt-Right?” (https://www.dangerandplay.com/2016/08/31/is-mike-cernovich-part-of-the-alt-right/) he states:
“Who you allow into your country dictates the nature of the country.
If you allow in more Nigerians, then Nigerians are less likely to become Americans than America is to become Nigeria. Do you want America to be more like Nigeria? If so, then explicitly state this, make your arguments, and persuade other people.
Can America continue to exist as a Western nation without Christians and Europeans? This is a fair conversation to have, just as people discuss whether Israel can exist without Jews.”
This is white separatism, which is a form of white nationalism. Here he is myopically fixating on race or nationality instead of shared values as a way of describing the content of the country. If you let Nigerians in, will America become Nigeria? He’s just asking the question! Although it’s clear he believes that the answer is yes. (Has he had experience with second-generation immigrants at all?)
Sorry, if I sound dismissive, it’s just because this kind of view makes me extremely angry and upset.
Your argument about him not being a white nationalist seems to consist of him saying he isn’t alt-right, and unnamed others also saying he isn’t alt-right, so that’s that. Even if he’s not alt-right, he’s still a white nationalist. Your article is titled “I did not call for an alliance with white nationalists, you fucking idiots.” So this calls a major premise, arguable the premise, of your article into question.
Whether he is alt-right or not is a red herring. Whether he says he is a white nationalist or alt-right or not is a red herring. The question is, what does he say and do when he’s not performing for an audience?
And, just to reiterate because I’m alarmed that you’re minimizing this, saying that someone who calls tolerance genocide is not unusually racist is not a blip on the radar. If this is what reads as “not unusually racist” then I’m concerned with what you’d consider to be “very racist.” Sorry, I realize this is blunt, and you’re feeling a little raw. My concern is that this line, more than any other, does harm to the premise of your article.
I came out of this article with the impression that maybe it might be prudent if you decided to examine some attitudes about race, assuming that you’re very attached to the notion that Cernovich is not a white nationalist. (You might not be, and you might not have done a ton of research on him; or this implication may simply be a consequence of writing while angry and tired.) This was the opposite of your intent in writing the article, if I have understood correctly. Maybe work on that or consider taking the article down, having a bit of a rest, and trying again when you’re feeling calmer? This is, of course, just a suggestion from someone who only reads your stuff casually. If you’re perfectly happy with the content, or you believe that I have misunderstood or mischaracterized it, then you can of course ignore me. I’m not the be-all end-all of internet commentary; I barely write at all, in fact. So it’s not going to harm you if you choose not to respond, or respond dismissively.
