People are always going to dive headfirst into the latest trend without really thinking about whether it’s necessary. I don’t think we’ll ever be able to stop this. The only thing we can do is try to make designers and people understand that a trend won’t equal long-term success.
Sure it’s great for a few months when the company is riding the “look! We’ve refreshed our website” wave, but all it will mean is you keep having to make changes to keep it up to date with the latest fad. You’ll waste time and effort creating sub-par work that doesn’t have any real meaning or thought put into it.
This is how we can separate the sheep from the shepherds (is that the worst analogy ever?). The sheep are the designers who simply follow the trend for the sake of it and the shepherds are those who really aim to set the trends and push the boundaries.
