Quiet Sundays
Sunday! A day to relax, a day to reflect, a day to do absolutely nothing, relax on the couch and drink some coffee! But what does the perfect Sunday look like? Some believe a perfect Sunday doesn’t exist, some believers think they cracked it years ago. Join me on this spectacular journey as I go deep into what a perfect Sunday looks like and whether it’s even possible.
Many great artists have written love songs about Sunday morning, Charles Givings once sang “I’m easy like Sunday mornings”, everyone remembers Maroon Five’s hit song “Sunday Morning”. If you search on Spotify you’ll find hundreds of playlists dedicated to the elusive Sunday. Did these artists find the perfect Sunday? Are these songs simply a love letter to a broken heart, one which can only be mended by the a rainy, quiet Sunday morning alone on the couch with a good book sipping an espresso. Why is it that when you think of a song associated with Sunday you think of the pitter patter of rain drops sliding down the window, a mellow day where there are no people about when often the reality can be very different.
To me a perfect Sunday can come in many shapes and forms and is usually dependent on the people I surround myself with. I love a morning curled up on the couch listening to music, drinking some OJ with a big helping eggs, hashies and mushrooms. I love a mid morning stroll through Manly to one of the funky coffee shops near the Corso. I love a hot sunny day lying on the beach. Sometimes I love the satisfaction of cleaning the bathroom or vacuuming the house. I also love getting on the ferry and adventuring around Sydney and looking for good coffee or good food. Sometimes I’ll sit on the balcony and read a book or jump on a phone call with a family member from back home.
I think the biggest achievement I can make on my Sunday is to simply be present and enjoy the smaller quiet moment before SMONDAY comes around.
SMONDAY: The moment when Sunday stops feeling like Sunday and the anxiety of Monday kicks in.
The best thing you can do is reduce the level of anxiety that comes from SMONDAY so that you can enjoy the rest of your Sunday. For me SMONDAY typically happens about an 30 mins to an hour before bed when I need to think about what I need to pack for the next day and to be honest I’m so used to it now that I basically harness that anxiety to be productive the night before and then I go to sleep. Every Sunday night you should try take any anxiety you have and channel it into preparation, whether that be putting your activewear out ready for the next day, preparing lunch or maybe writing down the top 3 tasks you want to achieve the next day.
Before SMONDAY even comes around though, there’s still so much Sunday to enjoy and appreciate. As expected, I’m writing this blog on a Sunday, whilst at home, relaxing on the couch and listening to a Spotify playlist called “Sunday Morning” (good playlist, I highly recommend!). It’s these quiet days that are perfect for reflection. For me I enjoy reflection through writing and sharing my thoughts with all of you. For some it may be meditation or practicing mindfulness. Sundays are perfect for this, but on the flip side you may enjoy hitting the gym or walking or swimming or just blobbing out watching the TV. If you work hard during the week, you probably want to take this Sunday to recover and relax.
However, I know there’s plenty of people out there that are studying or chasing a massive dream and Sunday is the prefect day to put in some hours towards your study or your dream whatever that may be. While many people are at the beach or napping in the afternoon, take those hours to put in some hard work towards your passion! Remember at the end of the day the biggest ROI is happiness, so find out what makes you happy and work for it, but if you’re already content with your life and enjoy every second of it (no matter how hard it may get) use that time for yourself and just chill the F out before.
The average person gets about 4160 Sundays in their lifetime. When I turn 27 in a couple of months, I will have used 1404 of those up already which is spot on 1/3 of them. So the next question is how am I going to use the next 2756 Sundays? The biggest goal I can make for myself and one that I pass on to you is to find your perfect Sunday. That may mean you love doing the same thing every single Sunday morning or it mean striving to do something new every single Sunday. It can mean whatever you want it to mean, but just remember it’s your life and your Sunday so treat each one as appreciation and respect because they’re here as your friend to help you be the best you possible!
So to all the Sundays been I appreciate each and all of you and all the Sundays to come I can’t wait for you to see what I have in store for you!
