School shootings happen all too often and are a tragic stain on anybody involved. Students should be able to get educated without a bulletproof backpack. But this isn’t a phenomenon strictly from the 2000’s.

January 29, 1979, was a perfectly average Monday morning. The children slowly arrived at the Cleveland Elementary School, ready to start their day. They stood outside the gate, waiting for their principal to open up when shots sounded.

From the house across the street, fire was opened on the group of children and the Principal, Burton Wragg. Wragg was shot and killed as he tried to help the injured children. The custodian, Mike Suchar, tried to pull Wragg to safety but got shot as well.

A call had quickly been made to police about the shooting. A young officer by the name of Robert Robb responded instantly. He too got hit by the gunman, suffering a wound in his neck.

By this time more police officers had arrived at the scene. Their only solution to stopping the firing was a garbage truck which they moved to the front of the school. By this time, 30 out of 200 shots had been fired at the school and anybody who happened to be at its…
