It took me a little while to get back to this. I could accept a “moderate” appointment instead of a “compromise” choice — however, remember that Graham (IIRC) suggested that Merrick would be a great choice, until he was.
I think compromise is accurate because compromise or bipartisanship is/was an anathema to the GOP (today, to everyone) — hence the panic when Garland was nominated. “What can we do?? We can’t compromise!!” So they didn’t.
Still, why quibble.
