Exciting Updates from the One Health Workforce Project

We have several new and exciting changes to the One Health Workforce (OHW) project technical team in Year 3, including a role change for one of our long-time technical leads and the addition of two talented technical leads that will work with our partners in Africa to support the efforts of the One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) university network.

Dr. Innocent Rwego, formerly a senior technical advisor with OHW, will now be our Strategy and Partnerships Project Lead for Africa. In this position, Dr. Rwego will work closely with the organizational development specialist and the project partnerships lead to support OHCEA in building and leveraging partnerships both with external partners and donors, including EPT2 partners, national government agencies and intergovernmental agencies, as well as internally with university partners and leadership. This role will build on the extensive partnership work he has already pursued within the region by creating valuable connections and engagements with key partners. Dr. Rwego will continue his technical role as a Point of Contact for the project covering Ethiopia.

Dr. Omer Njajou Tchikamgoua officially joins our team as a Senior Technical Advisor. Dr. Njajou Tchikamgoua has an extensive background in epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health. In his most recent position, Dr. Njajou Tchikamgoua was the head of the Public Health & Epidemiology Unit at the Université des Montagnes in Cameroon. In addition to his experience at the university, he has already worked on the OHW project as an OHCEA Cameroon activity lead working within the university to implement and manage national and international community-based and public health programs.

As a senior technical advisor, Dr. Njajou Tchikamgoua will be working with countries in the OHCEA university network to provide operational and technical support for network initiatives and activities. He will continue to be based in Cameroon to support university development within the region, particularly Cameroon and Senegal where he will also be a country Point of Contact. Promoting the role of One Health in training and education will be essential to this position as he develops relationships and collaborative programs with the networks, university partners, and external project partners.

Dr. Sylvia Wanzala joins our team in the key role of Regional Technical Manager and Senior Technical Advisor. Dr. Wanzala attended both Makerere University (BVM, MSc) and the University of Minnesota (MPH, PhD) where she pursued her studies in immunology, veterinary medicine, and public health. Dr. Wanzala also has previous experience with the OHW project as a One Health Resident and One Health Residency Mentor for OHCEA during the RESPOND project.

In this position, Dr. Wanzala will be working with the OHCEA Secretariat and the Regional USU Technical team to support regular communication, coordination and reporting of technical activities in OHCEA countries. She will also be responsible for supporting the OHCEA Secretariat in ensuring strong technical implementation in all OHCEA countries, and will serve as a country Point of Contact for the project for Uganda.

Please welcome our new additions to the OHW team. We look forward to continued collaboration across the project.
