A Happy Birthday to Me (and Usain Bolt)

Today is the anniversary of my twenty-seventh year of life and as usual, a lot of reflecting over the last year.

In the last year, I quit my big law job, went to Nigeria on a US Dept of State Fellowship and have met and interacted with more people interested in the development of African countries than ever before.

In the last year, I have laughed and cried and traveled and had more moments of “THIS IS WHAT I WANT MY LIFE TO LOOK LIKE” than ever before.

The one promise I made to myself a year ago, which was to get serious about making a decision to be happy, was kept, but not without its interesting moments.

Since last year I’ve gone to Tokyo, Mexico City, Seattle, Vancouver, Chicago, Lagos, and the wanderluster in me couldn’t be more pleased.

This year instead of a group birthday thing or meal (although I might still do a dinner in Houston next week to celebrate Houston Restaurant Week) I took a trip. By myself. To the beautiful country of Belize. Not because I was depressed or have no friends… but because… why not. And I’m a big proponent of doing things because you want to. That’s the ONLY reason you need.

Now on to the next year. My personal theme for the next year is “Be kind, especially to yourself”. The goal includes, travel more, test out more theories about how to live the life you want. Spend the time to figure out what you want. Be BULLISH on what you want.

More Quiet.

More meditation.

More prayer.

Less negative talk to yourself
