Students — want to compete for a chance to win money or an internship? Here’s your chance. From now until April 11, you can submit a project addressing a real-world problem using any of the open source tools from Microsoft Research to the Microsoft Open Source Challenge.

Once you do that, you’ll need to include a project description, goals, methods, challenges and any results obtained. Make sure to also submit sample input, output or screenshots to show you used the tool(s) in your project.

There’s $15,000 in cash prizes — $5,000 for first prize, $2,500 for four second prize winners. Some participants may also be invited to the Microsoft Research Laboratory and have the opportunity to interview for internships at Microsoft.

Projects will be judged on 1) originality of idea (30%), 2) depth of chosen tool (40%) and 3) readability of report (30%).

Just remember to register before you get started! Good luck.
