Modernizing a $1 trillion+ global legal industry requires us to think beyond traditional approaches to automation. At OpenLaw, we believe an open, interoperable, blockchain-based protocol can fundamentally change the industry and today we’re excited to announce an important new aspect of our work — our API, which we believe will be an important step into the future for the industry.

At OpenLaw, we’re building what can be thought of as a legal operating system for blockchain technology, helping to unleash a new era of commercial transactions.

The OpenLaw protocol seamlessly combines an entire generation of legacy legal technology — document automation, e-signatures, and contract management together — while also making it possible to build legally enforceable agreements for the growing crypto economy.

Today we’re excited to reveal that soon we’ll take the entire protocol even further by enabling developers to easily integrate OpenLaw into any legacy application, back office process, or even new mobile apps through our soon to be released JavaScript and REST-based API. The new API will be available to private instances of OpenLaw as well.

We’ve been working on the API for months, but, because so many are asking for details, we want to share an overview of our API today. As you’ll see, through our API you’ll be able to:

  • Access, save, and edit any legal agreement available via our protocol,
  • Use the Ethereum blockchain to store e-signatures,
  • Trigger any smart contract embedded within templates,
  • And more

Our API will make it possible for the OpenLaw protocol to seep into a wider array of applications and services, which we believe will power an entire ecosystem of integrated legal systems, and blockchain-based applications, that will streamline legal processes and further support the blockchain ecosystem.

We are packaging up core aspects of our protocol over the next week to make installation and setup easier. In the meantime, we’ve released detailed documentation on the API based on our internal development, including examples, on our Documentation Portal. Reach out to us at hello@openlaw.io with any comments or questions!
