My Nightmare!
“What goes around, comes around” or should I say “The neglected stone has turned to the chief cornerstone" ACT 4v11.
Right from my childhood, I knew stream water wasn’t hygienic acum with what I have seen people do in it or beside it, especially if the river serves as the only water source for the community. Which will act as their drinking water, bathing, cooking, washing, laundry, and especially their swimming pool.
Come to think of it, they virtual believe and know certainly that both human and their pets will use same water, thus polluting the only source of water in that community either with refuses, animal dungs, faeces and particularly human urine.
Suffice to say that this water gotten from the same (contaminated and polluted) river are being used without any form of water treatment, as ‘water treatment' looks ambiguous to them.
MY EXPERIENCE!
Being a Child I grew up where river is much closer than pipe borne water, and going to the stream to fetch water is much exciting especially going/moving in group, the songs we sang when going or the rat race we engaged in just to whin away the pain of the distance. Atimes we might be lucky to see fishes in the river and attimes the river may be polluted whereas we proceed to another river.
Not until we relocated from there, I never knew another convenient, save and secured ways of getting water exist, Life is beautiful when there isn’t too much stress. With each days technology took over from well water to pipe water, to individuals safe and treated water storage.
It’s very common to see a running pipe water in the city but only the rich can afford that in a rural community and its for him and him alone, or a community bore hole which runs for an irregular hour, leaving the villagers with the choice to either wait ‘tirednessly’ or to happily rely on there never failing stream water.
2016 my orientation was changed by NYSC and they left me with an option of living with my nightmare “The River" as the only source of water to bathe with, eat with, cook with and do laundry with!. Sure I don’t drink it! But there isn’t much different between the sachet water sold here and the stream. No matter how much disinfectant you use, your skin ain’t safe! Even your clothes ain’t spare from the water!
