Caterpillars on the Road

You watch hundreds, thousands of these micro-occupied caterpillars crossing roads or paths in fields. They don’t seem to understand what a road is, if not that they’re vulnerable to being trampled when upon it.

There are all types of caterpillars crossing these roads, big, small, colorful, bland, fast, slow. But none of that really matters when man and his boots or an animal and its hooves will walk along the path. The man isn’t looking, and the caterpillar, only for its timing and placement, will be crushed underfoot.

Perhaps that is life.

And at the end of the day, these qualities that distuingish us from our fellow, our strength, our health, our intelligence, our beauty, are effectively meaningless in achieving our longevity, and in truth, our lives, their success and longevity, are all simply a matter of our position in relation to the cold, natural, systems that surround us.
