Yes, I agree this issue needs to be talked about more. I grew up in an Asian culture where if someone Asian was said to “look white,” it was automatically a compliment.
Some embarrassed Asians try to dismiss this as a matter of socio-economics, especially if they belong to one of the wealthier East Asian ethnicities. But you can’t buy race. No matter how rich you are, you’ll never be white. And this internalized racism afflicts ALL Asians, regardless of GDP or personal wealth. And we have to be more open and critical of it and not either try to bury it or have some HuffPo confessional essay once we feel safely assimilated into whiteness.
