The Stories We Tell Ourselves

“I’m not really much of a writer”, I think as I sit down to write this blogpost. Honestly, that’s what I’m thinking right now! It’s a perfect example of a limiting belief; something we believe is factual when in reality it’s just “the story I tell myself.” It reminds me of the many times as an art therapist I’ve heard people say “I can’t draw.” The truth is some skills we need to work hard to cultivate, but we all have an innate ability to be creative. What stops us then? Self-consciousness, fear of judgment, and expectations take over. Sound familiar? We stop doing many things in an attempt to protect ourselves from external criticism, and ultimately limit ourselves out of fears or expectations. We attempt to protect ourselves by always “succeeding”, which in fact, is impossible. Looking at where our expectations originated can be enormously helpful in moving through a time we’re feeling stuck. Expectations placed on us by societal “norms” and by our caregivers form the basis for our view of the world. Often they’re so much a part of us that we can’t see there are other options without another person’s help. But if we can see them, we can begin to challenge them.
