BSAF 2018: Independent Film Festival Boston, Day One
IT’S HERE! IT’S HERE! As we told you several weeks back, spring is the busiest season for film festivals in Metro Boston. And we’ve still got ONE LAST FESTIVAL to go! Independent Film Festival Boston kicks off eight days of its annual program tonight. And as
always, the festival will kick things off in style with one of the most beloved new coming of age comedy-drama’s around, Eighth Grade, from first time director Bo Burnham. Here’s the official synopsis:
Eighth-grader Kayla Day (Elsie Fisher) always has her phone in hand, hoping to find connections online that might make up for those she’s unable to forge in everyday life. She makes YouTube videos aimed at other adolescents dealing with similar issues — feelings of isolation, anxiety, and invisibility — but after so easily summoning wisdom and confidence when addressing her (barely existent) audience, Kayla finds them paralyzingly difficult to apply in real situations. In the final week of a thus-far-disastrous school year — and with high school looming on the horizon — Kayla struggles to bridge the gap between how she perceives herself and who she believes she should be.
The screening starts at 7:30 PM at the glorious Somerville Theatre in Somerville. Tickets for opening night are SOLD OUT…BUT there is a Rush Line for any left over tickets that might become available. Get there early to get in line in hopes of snagging the chance to see the film, director Bo Burnham and star Elsie Fisher, who will take part in a Q&A and Discussion following the film led by Boston Globe’s Meredith Goldstein.
IFFB, as it’s commonly known, will continue through next Wednesday, May 2. Screenings for the rest of this week continue at the Somerville Theatre, as well as Cambridge’s Brattle Theatre, then moves to the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline for the final two nights. There is a TON of movies showing at the fest, including some favorites from all of the major January fest circuit, SXSW, and Toronto, so you do NOT want to miss out! We’ll have day to day ticket info here, but to be sure you can get in to what you want to see, check out the IFFB’s official site and order tickets as early as possible! There WILL be Rush Lines for most features at the locations, but you are NOT guaranteed a seat if they sell out — only a limited number of tickets will be available.
