Portalverse network is excited to introduce a decentralized protocol for streaming games and interactive content via innovations in the blockchain. Making the future of game streaming peer to peer, solving the existing issues with gaming, and in turn, pushing forward the development of the best experiences the Metaverse has to offer.

One of the consistent improvements to technology has been the predictable pace of Moore’s Law; IE the number of transistors on a microchip doubles every two years. As computer manufacturing has matured more has become possible and expected from personal devices. Smartphones which have become a ubiquitous part of modern life, have been matched with increasingly sophisticated software and enabled immersive user experiences.

However, this trend isn’t infinite and we may be reaching a point of dismissing returns. Twice the amount of transistors no longer equates to twice the fidelity of the experience. Software makers cannot assume that consumers’ devices are going to become more powerful and users should not be expected to constantly upgrade their hardware to experience the best that the Metaverse has to offer.

Running a satisfying and immersive experience requires hardware specifications with significantly diminishing returns for users. Immersive technologies such as virtual reality require resources that the average consumer does not have access to. While hardware costs have diminishing returns, connectivity to the internet has never been more consistent which opens up opportunities using the cloud.

VR headsets still require significant hardware to support their experience

Cloud computing is a cost-efficient way of solving this hardware constraint issue. Cloud computing, generally speaking, is when difficult tasks are sent to more powerful computers elsewhere and the results are returned back to the user device. With cloud gaming, the responsibility of the users computer is only to send the input of the controls to the cloud and a video stream of the result.

So far cloud gaming has not met the expectations of users. From the point of view of the existing centralized cloud games, the asset-heavy properties of cloud games will be held back even by the trillion-dollar technology giants in terms of market value. Similar to the streaming business, network bandwidth and server traffic has always been the key to limiting such business. Latency issues have to lead to it not being taken seriously by a majority of gamers, part of this being the consequence of existing incumbents having centralized servers that do not render or deliver content right where their users are. On top of this many have restrictive ownership policies which do not allow for any ownership of games.

Introducing Portalverse Protocol

We believe that cloud gaming in the metaverse should be:

  • Smooth: Near-native performance of games
  • On-Demand: No wait times or waiting for machines to get ready
  • Encourage Ownership: Gamers can own their experiences and participate in the network

Community incentivization with Tokens

In the Web2 model, cloud game vendors need to continuously invest resources to expand their computing and network capacity, and use the built network as a leverage to charge players. This is not a reasonable model for creating endogenous value. When the Web3 era comes, the introduction of decentralization and tokens will improve the situation to a great extent.

In the design of Portalverse, high costs can be turned into benefits for different players within the ecosystem through token distribution and payment. Web3 transfers network value to users by means of tokens, turning them into system builders from the beginning and spontaneously forming community management, which will generate more possibilities for development within the project.

For the users, the equipment that is not normally used can no longer be down and idle. Specifically, owners of gaming devices (graphics cards and CPUs) can set up nodes and become part of the maintenance network, thus participating in the construction of the network and earning revenue by providing computing power to users. In Portalverse’s token economics, up to 40% of POV tokens are set aside as a block-out bonus as a potential income for computing power providers, and validators.

Decentralized Game Ecosystem

In the traditional game industry, the division of interests between developers and game platforms is also always ambiguous, whether that be PC launchers such as steam or Epic or console exclusive. Exclusive releases have been used to encourage sales of specific consoles, which in general is anti-user. The situation becomes even more confusing when the centralized cloud games with giant attributes appear.

The conflict between developers and distribution platforms over pricing has harmed most players and developers.

Within Portalverse’s ecology, there is no monopoly or restriction of a centralized platform, and both game developers and game players can get the maximum benefit of the game ecology. In the first phase of the ecology, Portalverse plans to provide a large number of popular games from the web2 era. In the future, native Web3 games will be gradually introduced to facilitate users to enter the web3 world in a non-perceptive state, and eventually let web2 players and the web3 game world gradually integrate together. And we will continue to incubate Web3 native developers.

Metaverse Infrastructure Framework

In the traditional gaming industry, players do not have full ownership of their digital versions of games. And another problem that plagues players is that digital assets within games are not interoperable across platforms, products, and games. Games set up like this only stand to benefit the publishers.

For players, after working hard to earn a lot of in-game assets in one game, they will immediately have to start again when trying another game. The use of a blockchain and tokens can be used to address these problems and ensure that these assets can be moved from the game.

Portalverse allows in-game assets to circulate freely without permission. This protects the user’s ownership of personal data while giving them greater autonomy. With the gradual realization of the metaverse, it will be far easier for users to carry their own data and assets between products than it is today to migrate from one platform to another, where the tech giants have a monopoly.

Ease of Development

Limiting the scope of hardware for developing creates a consistent workflow for developers. Less unique platforms, in general leads to fewer edge case issues as a result the cost of development goes down. Speed of innovation moves in step with the accessibility of technology, for the developers and the consumers.

Accessing an Existing Powerful Network

We are at the dawn of cryptocurrency mining operations being switched from Ethereum mining to any other altcoins with true utility, and most of the graphics cards being used for this mining are retail graphics cards that were built for gaming. There is a pool of miners awaiting this switch and looking where to provide their organized power. It comes with peer-to-peer rendering as a place where this dormant rendering power can be utilized to build out the complex experiences of the Metaverse.

Summary and Whitepaper

Portalverse is not just a decentralized cloud gaming platform, but a meta-universe infrastructure framework driven by game content and player-users. It also hosts the passage from Web2 users to Web3, a virtual world that can truly accommodate a wide range of people online at the same time and generate countless interactions.

We are excited to release our Whitepaper very soon which provides a technical overview of how the token incentive mechanisms work and other details. Join the discord and follow us on Twitter to hear about the latest developments.
