Muntjac Deer

Ruby Noir has provided an interesting prompt. “We share this planet with some pretty strange-looking animals. Some of which you may have never even heard of. Find out as much as you can about the strange animal and teach Medium all about them.”

The Muntjac deer (barking deer) isn’t really too weird but this deer has some very unique features. They are found in Southeast Asia, and some are found in the English countryside and in France. They are small, stocky mammals with very unique muscular glands that look like holes in their faces. They V shape on their forehead are frontal glands, while the preorbital glands sit just below the eye

The males have short white antlers and use them to fight for territory. They have the ability to regrow their antlers. They tend to live in areas of thick vegetation and they are nocturnal.

Muntjac deer’s frontal glands open about 0.39 inches and preorbital glands are much larger when open. The glands are crucial for communication, territorial marking and they are opened during defecation and urination.

“Here’s how a muntjac does this:

  • approaches a recognizable spot
  • sniffs it
