Summer in the DMV ~ Baltimore’s African American History & Culture Museum and dining at MVMP

An excellent field trip idea for Upper Elementary, Middle, and High School Students

Reginald Lewis’ African American History and Culture Museum has been on my Baltimore summer 2023 bucket list. This museum did not disappoint.

The Reginald Lewis Museum has a wealth of information!

I was really impressed with the many different aspects of African American history that were displayed in the museum.

There you can find detailed information about tobacco farming, crabbing, oysters, canning, boat construction, and so much more — all of which pertained to the history of enslaved people and Black history in the Maryland area.

I was really intrigued by the tobacco section because there was a “How To” pamphlet of sorts that outlined the steps of growing tobacco in the Maryland climate. This pamphlet used the vernacular from the 1700–1800s and explicitly laid out the steps for growing tobacco plants. I learned that the farmers and enslaved…
