The only way the gas station incident isn’t relevant is on the queer front. He didn’t say she was “a cute little girl”… he discriminated based on color, and he thought it was ok to sexualize a complete stranger. He likely meant no harm, but his words were harmful. For anyone to suggest that she should just “toughen up” trivializes and excuses bad behavior.

The hashtags would be funny, if they weren’t so tragic. The fact is that, depending where they live, the life of many black people is exhausting for the reasons Ms. Parker specifies. Throw in being a queer woman, and you have chronic fatigue syndrome.
