Well said. These shootings are usually a tragic culmination of longstanding flawed leadership/corporate culture, and a pattern of institutional behavior, rather than some kind of rogue one-off incident. The police culture can also often be disconnected from the prevalent attitude of the community in which they serve. In the case of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, there were several black officers involved who didn’t seem to have an issue with his treatment… an “us” vs. “them” mentality that possibly permeates the entire department (which is almost 50% black). Point is, if you’re black, don’t heave a sigh of relief if you’re stopped by a black, Asian, or Hispanic cop, as if you’re in the wrong city or town, there’s a good chance that they’re profiling you as much as their white colleague.
