The online career panel for banking & finance

“Getting connected with investment and retail bankers has offered me a genuine insight into banking” says a candidate who attended PathMotion’s Banking & Finance online career panel last week:

  • 35 candidates met 10 employees from 4 international banking firms
  • 33 open discussions were held during the hour
  • A discussion had 5 exchanges on average, involving multiple candidates and employees

Lloyds Banking Group, Citi Group, BNP Paribas and Santander put their employees forward to engage with candidates and promote a more authentic form of employer branding.

PathMotion is a big believer in the principles underpinning these online panels

  • Employees are best placed to share with candidates the ins and out of a career
  • No facts can replace a personal story and a quality conversation to drive candidate’s decision
  • More candidates can access “insider information”, not just the well-connected
  • A more efficient way of interacting which does not lose the human touch
Discussion example taken from the session

The discussions covered a wide range of topics: interviews and assessment centres; ability to travel in varying roles; and questions that many candidates would not dare ask in person or in front of a large audience, such as:

“What don’t you like about working in Banking?”

One candidate asked this tough question and received replies from both other candidates (recommending finance-related books) and employees who gave genuine thoughts relating to perception of the industry or confusing processes that they have to adapt to.

The online panel format proved to offer many benefits vs traditional career events

  • Companies gave a more accessible image to more candidates beyond those in the universities they usually visit
  • Conversations gained more depth than a mere Q&A as anyone could add to a thread
  • Everyone saved travel time
  • Multiple conversations took place at the same time
  • All conversations are now available for those who did not attend

The Banking & Finance Online Career Panel was the first in a series of industry-wide chats hosted by PathMotion. The next one in May, “What is a career in audit like?” will be represented by employees from KPMG, Deloitte and PwC.
