I keep up with strength training, so the knee stays at or near 100%. I’m thirty-four now, and have been a runner and a soccer player for more than half my life, so my knees both have been through the ringer and each behaves accordingly. That is to say, I have good days and sore days. My left one — the one I injured and had surgically repaired — tends to ache a bit more frequently if I miss a few consecutive days of strengthening (squats, lunges, stretching, that sort of thing. I’m a big fan of Shawn T’s T25 workouts, just to give you an idea what I mean by strengthening work). But I’ve been able to continue to run and play soccer at high levels. The key was the rehab. For three months, three times a day, I was doing the exercises. I started the same day I had the surgery and kept at it even after my physical therapist cleared me to return to full-go activities.
I think a surgery changes things no matter how diligent one is in keeping up with one’s prescribed rehab regimen. But those first weeks and months are crucial to getting back the joint’s full range of motion and strength.
