I guess what I’m trying to say is that there is a bit of myth-making involved with the creative process, particularly as it pertains to Brian Wilson and the idea of the lone mad genius. I’m not trying to discredit him and I think the nature of all creativity is that it pulls from that which came before. However, let’s not act like Brian Wilson is hearing voices in his head that nobody else is hearing. Even Phil Spector, for all the mad genius accolades that are bestowed on him, was merely trying to emulate Motown. In what I wrote, i said Brian is still a genius. But let’s not get out of hand here and at least put it in some perspective as it pertains to lesser-celebrated contemporaries whom he was obviously inspired by.
