For 10 of those rules, read Amir Shevat’s post here. This post is in response to Amir’s. I started to write a comment, but then felt it was important enough for me to write about it separately.

Rule #11— specifically for people at big companies

This point is written especially for people who work at big companies.

Before starting my own companies, I worked for big companies such as AOL, Vodafone and O2. Back then, my colleagues and I were very respectful of time spent by potential partners to come see us. We would always thank them and follow-up. If we decided not to pursue a partnership, we would tell them within a timely manner.

Today, many people (not all) working for big companies seem to be disrespectful when it comes to follow-up with potential partners. You can spend a half a day between travel and meeting the most appropriate person after navigating your way through very senior people, to end up with no follow-up on their end. What’s even worse is that they ignore your follow-up emails.

So, rule #11 — be respectful and follow-up with people who have spent time to come see you.
