Some additional points to make in this analogy is that of appealing to people’s need for drama, to simplify the complex into heels and heroes, and how people need an outlet for their aggressive feelings.

Unfortunately the world is complex, there are lots of special interest groups competing for our attention and many people are tired of participating in a political system dominated by these approaches. The biggest difference is that people have a choice to watch pro wrestling and many choose to pay to see it as a form of sports entertainment.

Opting out of participation in the political process has real world consequences. If people believe they have no acceptable options and only those who see the world from extreme perspectives participate, those elected to represent us have relatively few criteria to meet and may apply the same simplistic approaches to complex issues.

Fewer people participating with more extreme perspectives are easier to satisfy. In addition, people with more extreme views are less likely to analyze what’s going on. What they want is clear and is simply repeated back to them during campaigns.

In addition, special interests hedge their bets and frequently contribute to both sides. They also take things a step further by trying to shape public opinion through appeals to fear, sex, violence and other approaches which invoke strong emotions. These same emotional appeals are used to sell other products including the news stories produced by the mass media.

Moral issues are frequently a point of focus because they’re frequently associated with strong emotions and are frequently characterized in very for and against points of view. They often require minimal money to implement. Voters will frequently vote for or against a candidate or party based upon whether or not they’re for or against an issue.

If politicians are able to deliver on these clear cut moral issues, their supporters will continue to vote for them. This leaves the politicians with lots of discretion on other issues including being influenced by special interests.

Unlike pro wrestling where the fans are yelling at the wrestlers, citizens are yelling at politicians, corporations, sports figures, celebrities, activists, each other or they’re trying to limit their exposure to all of the drama.

Until we’re able to address these issues, the current political process will continue to grow. Being angry is not to conducive to rational discussion nor will it lead to viable solutions. Hopefully people will calm down enough to sort through the realities of life rather than react under the influence of strong emotions.
