The Friend You Make Along the Way

To 1Person,

When I’m with you I feel invincible, but is this what I’ve come to value in people? Have the friendships I’ve made been based solely on the way people make me feel? I mean, in its nature it sounds like a simple question to answer. Yes! I, possibly we, surround ourselves with people that make us feel good, but it just seems so selfish. That all our relationships seem to say is,

“Hey, I keep you around for my sake, not yours.”

No, this is not the way…

There’s more to a friendship than just myself — there’s you. Someone I can offer myself to, my whole self. A friend that validates the empty process of living. Someone that grabs me by the shoulders, shakes me awake and says,

“HEY! HEY YOU MOTHER FUCKER, IT’S ME! IT’S ME & YOU AND WE’RE ALIVE AT THE SAME TIME! THIS ISN’T ALL A DREAM, YOU’RE NOT ALONE. I LOVE YOU AND YOU ARE LOVED!”

Another person living their life, chasing after their dreams in the darkness of the labyrinth. As we navigate through, crying at the dead ends, blindly hoping on our lonely walks, we’ll look for each other. And if you search long enough, no matter how many times you get it wrong, we’ll find each other, again and again. If we don’t, here’s hoping God takes mercy on our fragile souls and leads us in the right direction so that when we do, we’ll hold each other tight and weep. We’ll say,

“Hey…hey you mother fucker. Thank you for finding me again, thank you for traveling next to me, if only for a moment.”

When our time comes, when I have to turn left and you right, we’ll look at each other through tender sorrow and bid farewell once more. I’ll walk straight, trying my best not to look back, trying my best not to cry, and I will fail. I’ll look back, I’ll cry, wondering the whole time if you’re looking back for me, if you’re crying for me the way I do for you.

Well, it’s about that time again, the labyrinth calls me and I must be going…

Until next time,
