The People Have Spoken, the Bastards

Can we call this type of referendum democratic? What gets a referendum and what doesn’t usually isn’t decided by the public. There are any number of topics way more hot-button for most than leaving the EU (the fate of the NHS, say) that will never see a referendum. Plus one is blackmailed into voting for a binary. There’s no third, “Give me more time to think about this” option. Instead, the result it effectively swayed by a vocal minority while the rest are sort of on the fence, leaving a 50/50 split.
